im not sure if it is an allergy or not. i get these clear "balls" in my eyes. they can streach out into threads and feel like an eyelash streached across my eye. i get them all year at all times of the day. if i get a lot of them in one day my eyes feel really dry. it is worse in one eye than the other and my doctor doesnt seem to know what i am talking about. my mother had the same problem and she said it went away in her 40's. im in my 20's. anyone got any ideas or have heard of this before?

I wonder if you have "Floaters". They can look like little or big spots that just float around in your eyes. Not harmful. Do you have any pain? It sounds like you do have some sort of feeling with it "like a scratching feeling? Try "artificial tears" to lubricate the eyes. You can use them often. If your eyes are "congested" or the whites are pink you might try an allergy medication. It might sting sometimes when putting it in, see if it helps. I have Acute Open-angle Glaucoma & have had to use many preparations for the eyes. If it continues to be a problem you may consider seeing an opthamologist. He can put your mind to rest and tell you of a problem.
I hope this can help you. Keep in touch. Lyndal

the little "balls" do come out if I rub my eye enough. which creates other problems if I rub my eyes too much but it looks like I will have to see an opthamologist because even my doctor doesn't know what I am talking about.

Lyndal,

I was told by my opthamologist that if you need eye drops often you should only use eye drops that do not contain a preservative. Other eye drops should not be used for too long a period of time (check the box information).

Getting clear, stringy mucous type discharge from your eye is a common thing. It is usually the result of a mild irritation due to environmental factors such as pollution, smoking, etc. Sometimes it's caused by an allergy. Sometimes the cause is not known. In severe cases of allergy it's called Allergic Conjunctivitis.

You probably don't need any treatment as long as it's not severe. By severe I mean, infected, red, pain etc. In other words, if you're just getting the stringy things and everything else is ok, you'll be fine. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

I have exactly the same problem and my optomotrist was very unhelpful! I get this 'guck' in the corner of my eyes, and then when i try to pull it out it's all 'attached' to the edges of my eyelids and when wipe it out, it 'strings' and pulls from one corner of my eye to the other, on the top and bottom lids! This is gross, but for lack of a better description, I call it 'eye snot' :P.

It wasn't happening the day I saw my eye DR so he told me it was probably just allergy related... However, it happens DAILY sometimes MULTIPLE TIMES DAILY and it's been going on for about a year now...

Any insight into how to relieve this problem would be appriciated, it's not only disgusting to me, but also embarrasing because I always feel like people can see it...

By the way, I'm 24 y/o male in good health otherwise, some seasonal allergies and pet allergies which are easily controllable. I have been wearing contact lenses since the age of 12, but I've used the same brand for the last few years or so (Acuview 2 bi-weekly disposible lenses) and never had problems with them before and I think this is un-related to my contacts.

Thanks for any info..
