View Full Version : Floaters

Hello!
My dad was just diagnosed with a large floater. I'm not exactly sure what this means, but he describes it as a painless but extremely annoying blemish over his line of vision. We just got back from vacation and he commented numerous times on how it was bothering him...not from pain, but from having something constantly hindering his sight.
He went to the doctor today and was told that this is something he will have for the rest of his life. There is no treatment and it will not get any better. He's 46 and is very depressed that he will have to learn to live with this. I can totally understand...if I had something constantly blocking my sight for the rest of my life, I would be despondent too!
I was wondering if anyone knew anything about floaters or about possible treatments. Is there anything that can help ease the annoyance? My optometrist is very old-fashioned, so I wanted to look into any possible new procedures. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

I too have floaters (it's generally caused from severe nearsightedness and I've had them since I was in grade school (my daughter is 14 and has had them for several years also!) Did he just GET it? There are no treatments, BUT, they are more severe in bright light (the WORST is florescent lighting! If he has an office job where he is always writing and reading in florescent lighting, he will be bothered much worse)
Mine just started with all black threads floating all around, then one day I got a big brown BLOB! Tell your dad he'll get used to this! I'm serious. The BIG brown blob isnt there all the time, but the thousands of black threads are - however unless I actually look at a white wall and THINK about it, I don't even see them anymore. The floaters are something insdide the vitreous fluid behind the eye. If he does have an office job, and this florescent lighting is a problem he MAY be able to do something about that - wear tinted glasses maybe, or if he has his own office, maybe he can lower the lighting - Of course I don't know his situation, but cutting down on GLARING light makes the floater(s) less visible.

Thanks so much for replying! His is an especially large floater, and he pretty much just woke up one day and there it was. He described it as a sperm-shaped thing, with a large body in the middle and a small thread-shape coming off of it. I'll tell him that it's possible to get used to it, and will suggest what you mentioned about florescent lighting. He works in his own office, so he may be able to do something about that. Thanks again!

Yep, they do pop up overnight! My big brown blob (mine's like someone smeared something over my eyeball!) just appeared suddenly! Let me know how your dad makes out with adjusting the lighting to compensate!
