I am an athlete but at age 54 my blood pressure is rising. What medicine does not degrade athlete performance? Beta blockers can limit max heart rate. What do you recommend?

Hi,
I'm 24 and I tried all the HBP drug classes. Beta-Blockers made me unable to exercise and if I exercised for 10 minutes I feel it's like 100 minutes :(. ARBs and ACEs were even worse, the only drug class that has zero effect on my energy and didn't limit my heart rate is the CCBs. Now I can exercise 1 hour without no problems at all :D.
What is your bp medication?
Good luck,
Michael

I recommend ACE inhibitor (enalapril, captopril, lisinopril, ramipril) and/or diuretic. The latter if you tend to retain water easily with increased salt intake.
If the ACE inhibitor makes you cough, then an ARB (Diovan, Cozaar, Avapro, Atacand.)
None of the above should cause too much inhibition of athletics. Diuretics should be monitored regualrly for any signs of throwing electrolytes out of whack...too low potassium or sodium.
