I found out that I need to get glasses, but I also have the choice of getting contacts. I would prefer contacts but are they hard work, and is it better to just get glasses? Thank you.

View Full Version : Contacts or Glasses?

aly828 04-17-2002, 06:57 PM I found out that I need to get glasses, but I also have the choice of getting contacts. I would prefer contacts but are they hard work, and is it better to just get glasses? Thank you. skip_to_my_lou 04-21-2002, 11:57 AM I would suggest getting both contacts and glasses. If you plan the wear your contacts mainly, it's good to have glasses as a back-up in case your eye is irritated/infected from something or you tear or lose your contacts. As far as contacts being hard work, not neccessarily. The cleaning process is a lot less complicated now. You can even get the daily or monthly disposible ones. There are eye cleaning solutions out there that does the job in one step, but your eye doctor might suggest additional things to use like protein removers and such. It's not a big deal once you get used to them. I'll admit that it took me a long time just to get one in the first few times I put them in, but now it takes me 5 minutes or less. Your eye doctor will fit you with the right kind and then you will be instructed on how to put them in and how to clean them. If you're getting hard contact lenses, be forewarned that it's difficult to go from contacts to glasses because you won't see as well out of your glasses when you've been wearing hard contacts everyday. The soft contacts are no problem and you can even get colored ones if you so desire. (That's what I did this time around for fun.) There are days I just feel like putting on my glasses when I'm running late, but contacts are convenient as well. I hope this helps you decide. Take care! xKaShyLahx 06-06-2002, 10:56 AM i agree get both (abit pricey but worth it), my mom is short sighted & has both glasses & contact lenes she wears the lenses when she going out & the glasses when she in the house, i also wear coloured contact lenses & as far as putting them in goes its not a problem. I admit at first it stung & took ages to put in, but once i got use to the solution etc..it doesnt even take me 5 minutes hope this helps! LLDPaRN 06-20-2002, 08:07 PM I agree, if you get contacts, you should also get glasses just for backup. Over the last 6 months I've been wearing disposables that I change every 2 weeks. I like them very much and the cleaning regimen isn't as complicated. As one of the other posters said, hard contacts are much harder to get used to than soft ones, but supposedly you have sharper vision with hard ones. I've always had soft contacts (since I was 15) and had no problems adjusting. Good luck to you Laurie http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/wave.gif DanaJ 06-30-2002, 04:11 PM Definately get both. You can't solely rely on contacts. Unless your vision isn't bad at all. Glasses always come in handy when you're in a hurry and don't have time to put contacts in, or just when you have to take out your contacts at ngiht. etc. Also you may be without anything if your contacts run out and you can't get an appt for the eye dr soon enough. Been there done that. YOu should always have a backup... Not to mention in case somethign happens with your eyes and you are temporarily unable to wear the contacts. Carroll 07-26-2002, 10:53 PM well, considering my 6yo is an accomplished contact user I'd argue they aren't hard work at all... but then she's a lot more responsible than her momma! The hardest part is just remembering to take them out every night... and they must be really comfortable because my daughter can't even tell if they are in or not (she once came up to me and said there was something wrong with her contact because everything was all fuzzy... her contact was hanging from her eyelash, lol!). The glasses are actually harder to deal with... they always seem to need adjusting, you have to constantly worry about them getting scratched or damaged, or hair getting caught in them, or falling down the nose, and they are constantly getting smudged and needing to be cleaned and you have to worry about what you use to clean them with. Plus, at least for my daughter, she sees better with her contact than with her glasses.
