I went to the Urologist today. They only took a urine sample and talked to me about kidney stones. He said that it sounds like it is still in there because of the mild pain that comes and goes. He will see me again in 3 weeks. He gave me flomax to help relax the ureter.
Anyone with experience on this med?
i asked him the side effects and he told me it may make me feel dizzy to take it before bed.
Did I mention to you all I also suffer from anxiety disorder?
well it went ok but i wish i had more answers. I did ask a lot of questions and he answered them the best he could...but I will know more from the tests in 3 weeks.

I took Flomax for several weeks in May and June. I didn't get any side effects, but I also didn't notice that it did anything. But, I don't know if it did any good or not. I got off of it like 3 weeks ago. Hope that the urologist helps!! Did you like him?

Didn't you have a CT scan? Did the urologist say anything about it?

I took Flomax for about two months to help pass the stones - before and after lithotripsy. I didn't help before litho. I did pass the stone after litho, but not sure if Flomax helped that or if it would have passed anyway. The only symptoms I had were sleepiness, so take it before bedtime as my doctor recommended, and a slight increase in urination. I have since learned that it can have some effect on your eyes - but not totally sure what that is or how long you have to take it before that happens. If you watch the commercials it does say to tell your doctor if you are taking Flomax before catarac surgery. For a short time you should be OK.

hi everyone. thanks for your support. i will have to check out the other posts on flomax. i am going to hold off on taking it tonight. see if my pain is gone or not. I did have some mild pain last night and the night before, but none today. I will give it one more week and if the pain keeps coming and going I will take it. I return to him in 3 weeks.
He said that the stone was actually very low in the ureter in the CT scan which was a good thing.
I asked a lot of questions but did not get very specific answers yet.

The flomax is supposed to help push the stone along, it's not for pain, so it might be a good idea to take it. I have been taking it. There haven't been any side effects for me. I think what it's supposed to do is make your urinary system contract to help you push it along. It's very important that you drink lots of water too. Good luck!

the main question that i did not get an answer to was what kind?
and the dr said that he wanted to hold of on urine testing for what kind it may possibly be until after we are for sure the stone has passed.
or with the stone itself.

I guess my question for you guys still remains..how do i know if i passed this thing or not.
also what do you suggest for straining urine? the pharmacy did not have anything.
Today I feel normal..no dull ache...etc.
That is why I do not want to start the flomax. if the stone has already passed than i do not need to add a new med to my diet!! i do not like medicine nor do i deal with side effects very well,,because of my anxiety. so i only take meds if it is absolutely necessary.

thank you so much! the dr did not mention further scans.
he more or less said that I would feel normal if it passed.
but I would feel better about it with another ct scan that is for sure.

I found what also works for a strainer is the gold coffee filters or those little tiny hand held flour sifter ones. The major pharmacys do not stock them you need your real old local ones that still use ------ price tags! I think it is fun to go to the home improvement store and ASK the clerk - just so you can gauge his expression. Sorry - if you can't laugh at your own misfortunes you cry and that just is no fun.

Until they are sure that the stone has passed the 24 hour urine results can get skewed. The may be analyzing stone bits and not pure urine. Does that make sense?

The easiest way to find out what kind is to analyze the stone after you catch it in the strainer. Ironically even if you know what kind you have know, the next one may not be the same kind --- cruel joke of nature there.

I know this whole thing sounds scary but we will get you through this. Alas we have all been there - done that - WAY WAY WAY too many times;) .
