Hi everyone. I just have a few questions. My 2 1/2 year old granddaughter has had a 103-104 fevers for the last 3-4 weeks. They usually are high at nigh and then go down to 99.5 during the day. My daughter took her to the doctor the first week and the doctor couldn't see anything abnormal and said it must be a virus and should run it's course and she'd get better. It went away for a couple of days and then came back again. Took her back to the doctor and again everything looked ok. She had a severe case of pneumonia in Feb. which put her in the hospital for several days so they did a chest x-ray but it was clear. Again they said it was something viral.

In May she had tubes put in both ears and ever since then she has broken out in hives every day. They decided to take her to an allergists to see if there was a connection between the tubes and these fevers. That was two weeks ago. The doctor ran all kinds of tests and said she thought the hives were probably caused from the anesthesia and could last for another 4 months and put her on zertec every night for 4 months. Since she started on that she has no hives but if they miss a dose she gets them. However, she said the fevers aren't caused by that and the blood work showed that she has a viral infection. She did a great physical exam and everything looked good.

Starting this last Sat. she wouldn't eat or drink hardly anything and her fevers were hanging steady at 103-104. They took her to the pediatrition on Monday and after getting the lab work back and seeing that she had lost greater than 2 lbs they put her in the hospital. Her CO2 was only 12, glucose 68, K+ and N+ in the gutter and WBC which showed a viral infection. She said what it meant is that she was severely dehydrated and has a viral infection but not sure what kind. They did a U/S to r/o an appendecitis but it was ok as was her kidney function. Her mono test was negative. They didn't do a west nile becasue they would have had to do a spinal tap and she said there would be no other treatment than what they were doing anyway.

They gave her a bolus of D5W and then IV fluids and the next morning the CO2 was up to 19 and her glucose was normal. Her throat had what looked like ulcers on it but not strep as that was normal. She said that might have been one of the reasons she wouldn't eat or drink. After they got her hydrated and eating she was able to come home with strict orders to make her rest, keep her out of the sun, make sure her temp stays down(which it did after she was hydrated) and keep forcing the fluids. They are going to do strict out-patient doctoring too.

Has anyone had a kid get these fevers with a virus and get dehydrated to such critical levels? I was scared to death. My son-in-law has one of those attitudes where he can't seem to recognize how sick she gets so I am really afraid he won't watch her fluid intake and she'll end up right back where she was. She really does look better and acts better than she has for a long time. Also, have you ever heard of any kids getting hives like this after having anesthiac? She was 31 lbs and is now down to 27lbs which the doctor said is a big weight loss for a toddler.

Thanks for listening to a scared ole grandma.:(

my oldest daughter broke out in high fevers (103-104) when she was starting to get her back molars, and she wouldn't eat or drink anything either. we forced fluids with a syringe when we had to so she didn't dehydrate.

my youngest had thrush in her mouth, and there were no signs anywhere, except for ulcers way in the back of her throat... did they do a test for thrush? i know it wouldn't explain everything else, but.... would explain the not wanting to eat or drink...

as for myself, whenever it is warm (in the house, outside, wherever), my temperature can shoot up to about 101.5... when it's cold, my temp drops down to 96.5. i haven't gotten any answers yet as far as WHY, but you might look into the environment your granddaughter is in when she gets the high fevers? when i said "warm" i'm talking anything above 78 degrees, and my temp rockets up! maybe your granddaughter has a similar problem?

did the doctor check to see if she was allergic to the actual tubes in her ears?

I asked the doctor if she could be allergic to the tubes and he said absolutely no. They are not made with anything kids can get allergic to. I still wonder if she is allergic to them because these allergies started after the tubes. As far as the fevers it seems to make no difference at all. I keep my house a little cooler(menopause!!!) around 72 and they keep theirs at 74. She often will wake up with a high fever 104 and after motrin or tylenol it will come down to 99.5-100. They said a virus can last for weeks and the most important thing for us to do is keep her hydrated.

hmmmmm...... that's frustrating! i might get a second opinion about those tubes...

i just remembered something else about mouth/throat ulcers. when my oldest started brushing her teeth, we got her some oral B stages disney princess toothpaste. after a few uses, she got a couple of pretty big mouth ulcers, and one or two in her throat. she also had a high fever (102-103) and just generally felt yucky, so we attributed the ulcers to the illness at first. it wasn't until several days later (long story) that we put it together that the toothpaste had given her the mouth ulcers!!! i'm guessing some kind of allergic reaction to it , no idea really. we just quit using the toothpaste, and her mouth got better. anyway, something to look into for the cause of the ulcers.

will she eat popscicles for hydration? we went and got popscicle trays from target and let our oldest "help" make popscicles last time she was really sick (she HATES pedialyte pops and just flat refused to have anything to do with them!), and because she helped, she was more willing to eat them. we just mixed a water and apple juice blend (3 parts water, 1 part apple juice) and poured them into the popscicle tray and she loved them!

i have heard of viruses lasting that long, but my only experience with it has been the nose that runs forever, or the cough that never quits! i've never dealt with a long term fever like that! hope things start getting better!

My son was diagnosed with a "viral infection" when he was 8 he was very sick, high fevers his head hurt so much he couldn't lift it off the pillow, he had it for 11 days. Unfortunately 6 years later we found out that he had contracted Lyme disease at that time and was not treated for it, and now he is in the Chronic Late-stage. After the so called viral inf. he began having alot of neck pain and had frequent throat infections, but it took years for it to become full blown. It is something to look into, if someone had mentioned it to me I could have saved my son alot of pain and suffering. Good luck and I hope that she gets better soon. Sarah

Hi there,
I can understand your concern for your grandaughter. My son is now 2 1/2, but he went through something similiar. It turned out to be a long sequence of different illnesses he kept getting one right after the other. We were literally in the DR office very week with something new. I kept asking my mom, "you don't think I am crazy do you?'. It was very frustrating.

Within one year he started with severe pneumonia, then RSV, scarlet fever, severe dehydration and ended up in hospital, two sets of ear tubes, I was told he had shingles although he never has had chicken pox, so many sinus infections I could not count, and 104 fever for about three weeks. To this day, no one could tell me what the fever was. They ran every test you can possibly think of including luekemia, tick bites, viral, bacterial. He eventually came out of this cycle of getting sick around 18 months. He is now a very healthy two year old. But I was very very worried that they would find something major.

He had the rashes and sores with scarlet fever and then again with Shingles, high fevers, coughing, violent vomitting, severe dehydration, weight loss.

When my son was going through all this, the hospital told me to keep the air between 68-70. But no one really told me what caused the fevers, they just went away after about three weeks.

I would like to know if anyone actually ever found out what was wrong with their children and/or grandchild concerning these fevers and rash, this so called viral infection. We have been battling this for 4 mths now with my granddaughter who is 18mths. She had tubes put in around mid April, and at least once a wk. since my daughter has had her in the drs. or the emergency room. One time its sinus infection, every other time it is viral. She was born 3 wks early and only weighed 5lbs but everything was normal, now Thur. this dr says pneumonia is setting in and this is normal with premature babies. She does go to daycare and has since she turned 1.I keep my other granddaughter and she has not caught it.We are at our wits end!!!By Thurs. of every wk.,daycare is calling my daughter by afternoon to come and get Gracie, with 102 fever, and this wk bumps in her mouth!!1If anyone can help please let me know. She was covered in a rash this past Sat.from head to toe and of course the dr says all is normal with this viral infection. It is so frustrating to see a child sick and there is nothing you can do to help them. She is small anyway, weighing only 21lbs and she lost 10ozs. this wk!!! Thanks for any help!!!!frustrated mamma:confused:
