went to see an oral surgeon today for my consult to have my teeth all removed for dentures, they did an x-ray and to my shock i was told that my jaw was rotted??? what the hell is this??? he says its very very serious and i have to have surgey soon, on the 17 to be exact, ive researched the internet to only become more concerned, ive never heard of this nor has anyone i have talked to since my appointment, im scared to death, i know they will have to remove my teeth as planned but then split my gums and remove/scrape some jaw bone!!!! please any advice or anyone know what this is, the only thing i came up with online is something called " osteonecrosis, but who knows!

I can't respond to help you with the rotting jaw as it sounds like my problem is completely opposite of yours, but I have had bone shaved off my jaw. If the bone removal is anything the same, maybe this will help a bit.

The procedure I had (and am getting ready to have again on another portion of jaw) was called an alveoplasty. It entailed slicing my gum from above my eye tooth all the way to the back of the jaw. They then lifted the gum and used a tool that looked kind of like a cone shape drill bit to shave off a bunch of bone and contour the bone. They then stitched the gum back in place along the upper part of where they sliced and between each of my teeth. They gave me about 8 or 10 shots to numb the area and some antibiotics, anti-nausea pills (as a precaution) and some pain killers to take. I was on the pain killers for several days. It took about 10 days for most of the swelling to go down. It took a couple months before the area was no longer tender at all.

I wish you all the best when you have your work done.

kl,

The main references to jaw rot (osteonecrosis) in the literature seems connected to the use of the drug FOSAMAX. Have you taken it?

not that i know of i havent, the issue with that is that i was on ALOT of meds from the age of 10 to 16 to treat tourettes, then they were still unsure of the disorder, im getting my records to see the list of meds that i took as a child..many of them are no longer even made which makes me wonder!!! im just confused now though, how this happens, besides the meds. theres not to much available online as far as that goes, seems to all be about 6-7 articles on the issue, anyhow the surgery is on the 17th,thank god i will be under and not awake for it =)
