View Full Version : Lupus and Eye Watering In the Sun?

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone else ever had their eyes water alot (like when you cry hard & alot of tears roll) as soon as you go outside?

Yesterday morning I went to the drugstore and as soon as I stepped outside my eyes started tearing like crazy. This went on during the entire drive (maybe 3 miles) to the store. It was odd, though, my eyes did not hurt nor burn, nor itch, it was just this excessive tearing. FOr some reason it seemed it was due to the sun. It was completely clear & bright out, it was a little hazy. Of course while in the store I bought some sunglasses and had no tearing while wearing them on the way home.

I think I am in somewhat of a flare right now, too. I had a spinal nerve block done about a month ago; and about 3 weeks later I think the steroids in the shot wore off b/c I started flaring. I also got some hives again, not to mention my eyelids are all puffy and all my joints are killing me. I am on Plaquenil and this has happened to me before w/ injections and the flares only last about 2 or 3 weeks, so it should go away soon (I HOPE).

So now Im wondering if the eye tearing could be part of a flare??? THough I don't ever recall this happening before....

I don't know for sure if it is flare related or not, but my eyes often tear like that. I remember when I was a kid having that happen around the time I first started experiencing symptoms of SLE. I, my brother, and some other children had earned money doing yardwork.......they all bought toys, I bought a pair of sunglasses:rolleyes: I have sunglasses stashed all over my vehicles, my house, my purse etc.. :D I hope your flare ends quickly and you are hive-less and feeling better soon!

It is hard to tell what symptoms are actually from Lupus as we all know they can be endless, but I do tend to think the tears are from the bright light outside as mine have always been very senitive (photo-sensitivity) eve on cloudy days. Also, dry eyes are common with Lupus and that can cause tearing as well.....just think it is more inclined to be from the brightness outside. If I don't have sunglasses on when I first step outdoors, my eyes won't even open from the bright sun and yes, they tear a lot.
