He said that my cigarrete smoking is probably causing all my neurological symptoms. Then he told me the fireballs/shooting stars that I see from time to time in the shower are a HALLUCINATION!!!!!! I do not do any drugs so how would I be having hallucinations.

He ordered a MRI of my brain, neck and spine. Also he ordered a EMG (some sort of electric test on my nerves).

I asked with all of my symptoms could this be MS? He said maybe, he will know more after the MRI. He said because I smoke that I will have many white spots on my brain also clogged vessels in my brain due to the same thing.

He said the electric shock in my head and second toe he has no idea, also the numbess I get in my right thigh he has no idea....he said "maybe your just crazy"!

Im left frustrated and more confused than when I went in. He also said they diagnose people with Fibromyalgia when they can't figure out whats wrong.

Is any of this true?

Hi Hope

Where did this guy get his medical degree?? Walmart??
There seems to be a rash of Neuro Quacks out there lately. Every day it seems that there is someone posting about a Doctor who dismisses a patient by saying they need a Shrink when their symptoms don't immediately show MS. After seeing them they probably do need a psych eval for stress.
How frustrating for you.
I would get the tests done and go from there with the results to another Neuro who specializes in MS. I have been a smoker for years and my MRI didn't show any white spots, and the electrical shocks in my head that go down to my feet when I tilt my head were diagnosed as L'hermettes (sp?) which is a classic MS symptom.
You know your body better than anyone, and if you feel that something is wrong don't give up until someone listens to you. You deserve answers.

Take care
KT

Thanks for your reply
He just wouldn't let the smoking go. He kept harping on it and at one point he actually THANKED me for smoking, he said smokers will help put his kids thru college!!!!!! I said give me some of your cards and I'll pimp you out to all my smoker friends!!!!!!!!

Did you have the EMG? I'm kind of worried because he says it only hurts the ones who take chronic meds, and I said like my Darvocet and he said YES! He said smoking is more dangerous than narcotic pain relievers!!!!!

He asked if I drank alcohol and I said yes maybe 1 beer a month he said oh ok, and when I asked why he said that will do your nervous system in too.....people who drink bring me good business too!!!!!!!!!!

I'm confused wouldn't the radiologist read the MRI and give the reports to the Dr? I didn't know that the Dr's read them themselves.

Hope!

Your doc sounds like the Quack from Heck! I would NEVER see him again if I were you. I can't believe he talked to you that way! I would have gotten up and left if he made that remark to me about putting his kids through college. I just pray one of his kids doesn't develop MS. I would definitely find another neuro. I agree totally with KTMorra, except that to say he got is degree from Walmart would be an insult.............to Walmart :D (sarcastic son of a gun!)

You might want to consider another neuro. best of luck to you and keep us posted.

hey hope, I just went to nuero last week. I too have white spots. They tell me it's normal. If it's normal why do I have so many symptoms. I smoke also, but they didn't say anything about that. But they want me to see shrink. I don't have a prob with that, but there is something physically wrong. I can feel it. I try not to bring smoking up becasue docs are good at blaming everything on that. I hate them right now! try to take care.

I also have a problem with my hands, in the summer they are BRIGHT red and they burn and I cannot make a fist. He said well how do you hold your cigarette then!!!!!!!!!!! He even knew what I was talking about when it came to EM (my hands)

Sadly he is the ONLY Neuro in my area :( Im going to go try and see if I can find one closer.

Everything was a joke to him.

He also said the EMG would hurt if people took narcotic pain relievers, and I said I take Darvocet and he said I know, it will probably hurt.

Ditch him and the high horse he rode in on! Give me a break...

I also smoke and at least my neuro said that the smoking had nothing at all to do with it. Acttive alcoholism or the DTs can be a problem but regular smoking, while generally unhealthy, or the occassional drink will not elicit these types of symptoms.

EMG/NCV are not comfortable but it has nothing to do with pain medications. Your muscles and nerves are activated via electricity in order to get a response. Sometimes it is quite a jolt but you will get thru it fine. A lot of the times it feels like licking a 9volt battery or smacking a funnybone. Try to stay relaxed and it won't smart too much. Heck, I could even laugh or chat thru most of it. (but I was glad to get out of there once it was done!). I think pain is a relative term to each individual.

What on Earth has caused this latest rash of first class medical morons? Enough of the crazy talk - while I respect the psychiatric field it does not solve the physical problems some of us are having. If I went to the ER with a painful bent arm the doc wouldn't tell me it was all in my head. He would examine it, order XRays and then set the broken bone. Just because the ER doc couldn't "see" the bone doesn't men it isn't broken just the same.

Sadly I went to this Doc because my Rheumatologist is a real moron. He could care less about my pain, just says there is no magic pill for your problem. Umm I don't want a magic pill but some relief to get thru my day wouldn't be to much to ask for would it!!!!!!!!!

Then you cannot even bring up the neuorological problems he just gives you that "Look" and says you have fibro and nothing else!!!!!! Umm hello, Ok if that is all I have and not MS, well fibro has Neurological things that come with it too .... like DIZZINESS, tingles and on and on......there is nothing you can do for that?????

These so called specialists don't even specialize in their specialties!!!!! None of them know anything!

Rant over ... lol

This Neuro is definatly off the wall to say the least!!!!!

Nicotine toxitity will cause some neurological deficits ,but usually on the mild side.X-smoker and my symptoms are still here.(I do have DX )

As far as a EMG/NCS , pain meds do not react with them I take oxy and or vicidon for pain and have never had a EMG react to meds. There are certain meds they ask ya not to take prior to test ,but these are usually sedatives that effect the nerves.I have this test 2 times a year for radiculaopathy a nerve disorder of the spine. This test is a little unconfortable.

This neuro seems to be an over egotistic jerk wad.But he is having the appropreiate test ran and at this point thats a plus for you.

Once you get the results then switch.

Neuro's are a different breed of DR.they usually see patients and can treat their symptoms but are unable to cure the majority of our illnesses and I honestly thimk over time they harden and forget about the sencerity to their patients.

Keep in mind this neuro did not dismiss you,he just made your appointment miserable.

When do you get the MRI's and EMG done?

I'm not sticking up this neuro,it seems like this is the normal for neuro's here lately. For what its worth I've seen 3 before the 4th that DX'd me with MS.The first was a real a** ,just wanted to send me to a pain clinic,NO #2 wanted to wait and see,No #3 Whom I truelly liked ,lilked to fight with my specialist whom he sent me to.So neuro NO# 4 just happened to replace neuro no #1 and his office called and said he reveiwed my records and definatly wanted to see me.This was after a 2 year power struggle with these DRs.

Im not sure when the EMG test will be, he forgot to write the prescription for it so the nurse said she would mail it to me. The MRI has to be approved first by my insurance....she said I probably won't hear back from her until Friday.

I will get the tests done, I'm really anxious about the EMG though. But I'm sure I will survive, I did give birth 3 times lol The EMG will be on one leg and one arm.

The only test I will ever say no to is the spinal tap, so lets hope he never goes there or I will never know for sure if its MS or Fibro.

Hope,

Just more of my 2 cents worth regarding the spinal tap (LP - Lumbar Puncture). I had mine done in the hospital as outpatient under live x-ray. it was not as bad as i had expected. it takes time to extract the spinal fluid and afterwards they sent me to a room to lie flat for a couple of hours (could get a severe migraine if you don't) and to be observed. i never had a headache and for the next day and a half, it felt tight back there and a little bruised.

the only thing i felt was pressure and then he told me i'd feel an electric jolt for a second.

so if they need you to do it, don't be too scared, it was not as bad as i thought. maybe your doc could prescribe a sedative for the procedure if you do have it. hope you don't have to though :)

michelle

I'm w. Michelle--my spinal tap was 99.9% pain-free. Worst part was getting me positioned on my left side, since my dislocated shoulder is still sore. I just breathed deeply and stayed calm, and it was fine. I was a bit light-headed so stayed prone for about 15 mins, then went off to have blood drawn--for some reason they needed to do it soon after the LP.

I have a sort of uncanny knack for telling from a practitioner's first touch if he/she is a healer, in the sense of being in tune with the patient's body. My neuro is definitely one of these. And I can run my hands over a horse and tell if it's sound or not. Last time I tried out a horse for a friend, I *knew* there was something wrong. Rode him, still felt it. Advised not buying--and the horse was dead 2 days later from a neuro problem! When I was younger I was in great demand because of this skill--not even illegal doping could fool me. Hmmm--a second career, except I'm not steady enough on my feet to be around them!

My spinal was difficult,do to scar tissue but pain free.

This test will rule out several disorders or include MS.

You can tell your Neuro that cigarette smoking does not cause the neuro symptoms your experiencing.

I quit smoking and I still have these darn symptoms. They didn't lesson.I'm just in a relapse.

Emg/NCS are not that bad,if the tech is good it won't be bad.

Thanks for all of your support. I had a colonoscopy that wasn't as easy as everyone said it would be. Also, I had three children natural with no pain relievers, I would not in any way have the epidural because they weren't putting a needle into my spine.

I know we all have to do what we all have to do, and this is just one no matter what I will not have done. Also, a member of one of my other boards was recently diagnosed with MS, she did have the spinal tap. When she saw her MS Specialist, he said it didn't care about the LP because he said they were a waste of time and he no longer used that to diagnose or confirm MS.

I really didn't go to the Neurologist to find out if I had MS, he brought it up....I went for dizziness.

I'm stubborn and I do appreciate all of you trying to help.

Hope
