I had my GB out 2 months and I am having a BAD problem...Everytime I eat or drink something other then water I have to go to the bathroom within 30 mins if not much sooner or durring the time i am eating. And not to be sick it is like water and it will last for 2 or 3 trips to the bathroom until i eat again then it will start over again...I am so upset with this. My PCP says it is normal but I dont think he understands how much i go..I am still on the down side and dropping weight. Anyone ever have this problem? IS there anything they can do? thanks mike

Yes, there are meds they can give you to take before a meal. I forget the name but your doc should know. Are you on a fat free diet? If not, you should be. Also, somethimes roughage (lettuce, etc) can also cause this in recent gb removals. If you just eat a slice of bread by itself does the same thing happen?

DVC,
Unfortunately mike, these are some of the things they DON'T tell you before they wheel you in for that overdone "ever-so-simple" gall bladder surgery.
I would start taking daily or twice daily psyllium (Metamucil or its cheaper cousins.) Don't worry that they all say LAXATIVE on the box...they will actually slow down transit time in cases like yours.
I think part of the problem is that without your GB you are now always dribbling bile into your small intestines, whereas before it was stored in your GB and pumped out only when eating fats or acids. I THINK it gets better with time.

Yes i have to go even when i eat something as simple as bread. I am still on a very low fat diet i have been really scared to come off of that because of how much pain i had before. The only thing that seems to be fine is water but anything else goes right threw me. I had a very bad experience with this GB removal and not on a very good terms with the GB surgen he called me in there 5 days after surgery to remove my stitches and stapels and my bellybutton split wide open 10 mins after they where out and now i have a huge thick scar there so i was not thrilled with him about that and told him so. All the females in my family have had there GB's out and none of them have had this problem as bad as i do. going to the bathroom 5 to 6 times aday is to much on parts of your body.. I guess i should say how i have no energy and how down in the dumps i feel ever since this thing has come out.

Chronic diarrhea is not an uncommon side effect after gallbladder removal. I had it and suffered for years. Sometimes were worse than others. It is not good for your bowels and I've had a hemorrhoidectomy since. The hemorrhoids were blamed on the chronic diarrhea. Anyway over the last year I have figured out that if I eat a high fiber diet it cuts down on the diarrhea. Also the same surgeon performed my hemorrhoidectomy also removed my gallbladder. He prescribed me Questran. It is a powder and is primarily used to reduce cholestorol. It works by have the excess bile bind with whatever is in the Questran. I do not take it often but I do take it if I have 2 loose stools back to back. Even if the back to back is not the same day. I take the Questran for several days and then I am back to normal. I would ask my GP or surgeon if they thought that would be something they thought would help. Just put Questran and diarrhea in whatever search engine you use and you will find many people use it for chronic diarrhea and swear by it.
