So... unfortunately, I banged one of my little toes into something yesterday. It hurt, but I could still move it. It is now just swollen and bruised (blueish/purple). Right now it doesn't really hurt - just swollen.

Marti - what are the chances that the toenail matrix is damaged from a trauma like this? The toe nail itself is fine, it is just discolored along one side of the toe, and maybe leading towards the base of the toenail. I think I may have hit it from the side. I ask because I am desperately trying to grow out my toenails to get rid of the fungus. I am hoping that my toenail will still grow?

The nail will still grow. You just gave your self a hematoma - nail bruise. The nail bed will probably separate from the nail plate where the blood has collected. Keep it clean and dry. If it already has a fungal infection, keep applying your medication. The matrix lied deep under teh cuticle skin and can run as far back as the first knuckle. On your fingernails, you can see the leading edge of the matrix as the white half-moon at the base of the nail. Believe me, you would have had to rip the nail out to have damaged the matrix from just bumping the side of the nail.

Thanks Marti! The swelling is going down, and my toe is feeling much better. No pain anymore :) I can walk on it just fine. I think I had banged the side of the toe or something. I'm glad to hear that the nail will still grow. I will continue to apply the anti-fungal treatment.

Thanks again for your quick reply!
