So I finally have my neuro appt on Tuesday. He has my MRI films and all of my test results so far. My question is this: my MRI does not show any signs of MS and I am worried that he may want to take a wait and see approach. I agree with the many others that have posted about not self diagnosing, but I do not want to wait another 6 months or whatever with no progress toward an answer. How do I make sure that I get all of the testing done that I can? For example, if the exam does not point in the direction of anything in particular, should I ask for an MRI of the T spine and C spine? OR should I just go along with him and see an MS specialist if I am not satisfied with the tests he does or does not order? Just trying to get out of limbo!

Hi J
A lot depends on how you are feeling and functioning when you see the Neurologist on Tuesday. From my experience If you are showing definite signs or your symptoms are worsening to the point you can't function your Neuro will be more inclined to either do further testing or order medication to treat your symptoms. I would write down a list of your symptoms and questions and bring it with you to your Neuro appointment. Let him know at the beginning of your visit that you have the list and ask him to go through them with you. Don't be shy in asking for a 2nd opinion or a referral to another Neuro who specializes in MS. Let him/her know you are tired of waiting for answers if it goes in that direction.
Good luck and keep us posted on how it goes

MS can NOT be ruled out without an MRI of both the brain and the spine, usually the C spine...it also cannot be ruled out without a spinal tap...a spinal tap is usually only done to conculsively see what is going on with the spine- however, if you havent been ordered a spinal MRI, then you NEED TO INSIST on one. If that doc wont order it, then find one who will...
The wait and see approach is fine, if the doc is leaning towards MS, but you dont meet all the criteria, or havent had a onset of symptoms, or a real attack....however, if you have had at least one attack, its necesssary to get ALL the tests done so that you can start working towards a dx..
Good luck and keep us posted.
