The symptoms of mercury poisoning are the same as MS. I am not saying that removing all amalgams will make someone 100% without symptoms but it has been shown that many do improve. Some improvement is better than none.

Is that the substance that most dental practices use for fillings? I have many silver fillings but I've never known what they are made of.

Yes, they are approximately 50% mercury and are mixed with a combination of silver, tin and other metals in the other 50%.

Hmmmm....I had not heard of fillings causing problems. Maybe something I need to further research.

I and my father both have MS, and we both have "silver" fillings. I had a lot of them, and recently had most of them replaced with composites.

If you do this, please request supplemental air or oxygen from your doctor! It will fit over your nose. A filter mask is completely useless for this purpose. Mercury vapor is released when the drill tip hits the filling, and that is the most dangerous type of mercury. If you inhale it, it will be absorbed immediately. Some dentists will actually use air masks themselves, because it's dangerous to them too. They may charge you an extra fee for oxygen (shouldn't be much more than $100). Also, request to rinse after the dentist has done his own rinse of your mouth... you may find it difficult to rinse with your mouth partially numbed, but you can rinse out very tiny particles of the old fillings.

I see the mercury vs. MS issue this way: they do have similar symptoms, and so at the very least they will have additive effect. I may not improve my MS by removing the mercury amalgam fillings, but I may improve my symptoms. Some of them may be coming from the mercury.

Along with replacing your amalgam fillings it is important to not eat swordfish, shark, king mackerel and tilefish and to limit king crab, snow crab, albacore tuna and tuna steaks to no more than 6 oz. per week. These large species of fish/sea food contain methyl mercury. The FDA has issued this warning for women of child bearing age but like the amalgam, if it is going to increase symptoms it should be avoided by MS patients also.

It is very important to also chelate the mercury out of your body after the amalgams are removed. It can be done with vitamins and herbs. For those who still have amalgams you can take alot of vitamin c, reduced glutathione, selenium, vitamin e, and garlic oil. A very healthy diet without processed foods or any additives is important as well. MSG is hidden in food under a variety of names in conjunction with the mercury it creates even more problems. These things will help you out tremendously in the meantime.

Yes I did, many years ago. That was something I did early. Had them removed and replaced with composite. Part of my alternative quest for M.S. management. I've been dealing with M.S. for 25plus years with almost no meds and very little pain. Think I'm doing some things right.

Good for you. You are a role model for MS patients.

Hi,

I too have had all my fillings removed and replaced with white ones, I haven't noticed any improvements MS wise, but I'm alot more happier with an all white smile:D . My dentist didn't think it made any difference having mercury fillings but he didn't stop my request either. My fillings were old and cracking so I decided to have them removed, glad I did just in case

Were your fillings removed by a mercury free dentist? Did you do any heavy metal chelation afterwards?

Hi Catholicgirl,
To answer your question, no to both. Just my regular dentist, regular chair, I wore a dental dam and safety glasses, same with my dentist, lots of suction and water. Had 7 fillings removed on different appointments. Had this all done last summer. Everything is fine. I did voice my concern with mercury poisioning and he told me that their is such a small quantity of mercury that he was not concerned and there is no proof. He said lots of people have mercury filings and not everyone with those fillings have MS. I guess it's just a personal choice.

I'm not going to go as far as to cite this as cause for MS but I agree that mercury is not good and it's proven that it can definitely cause neurological symptoms. Also, that in susceptible individuals, it's even more potentially harmful. One thing for sure, mercury poisoning is real.

I had all my amalgam fillings replaced about 15 years ago. Since then I have gotten composite filling. I didn't notice anything as far as significant improvement but I have had MS at least 25 years and while it has progressed, it could be much worse. I really think that there is something to the mercury/MS issue. My body did have a high level of metal so I took an anti-metal oxidant and it seemed to help. I also only buy Papa George tuna which is caught in the deep sea so mercury is not a problem there. I believe in trying to maintain alternative healthy methods along with conventional ones.

Or a false hope....

Even though I made that comment, I still am open to the possibility of amalgam fillings being unhealthy.

If any of my fillings need replacing, I go with the composite fillings.
I don't know if getting them all replaced makes sense.
It just may expose myself to more mercury by having them drilled out.

Hi. I had all my amalgam fillings (13 of them) drilled out and replaced with the white fillings about 15 yrs. ago. I went into remission for 10 years after getting pregnant, and now seeing some slow progression (worsening) for about the last 5 yrs. I am so thankful for the 10 good years I had, and am 46 now. So whether it was replacing the fillings or getting pregnant, I don't know.
