Don't worry and don't be nervous. I was too and it really isn't that bad at all. You will be given tranquilizers before the procedure and those will either make you very, very relaxed or let you sleep through most, if not all, of the whole thing. You will be placed on a table and the x-ray machine will find the right spot. The tech will situate you so that you are located correctly. You will probably have a blood pressure cuff. Then they start the machine. You really don't feel anything accept a mild pinging sensation in your back. You can hear it, but that too is not bad. The whole thing takes about an hour, but that time goes very quickly. Afterwards they will watch you for a little bit and give time for the drugs to wear off and then you are on your way. Have someone to drive you though.
You will probably feel tired afterwards, so feel free to sleep when you get home. Your back will have a bruise or several bruises (normal) and you back might feel sore for awhile and ache (normal too). Neither of these is terrible and I handled it all with Tylenol. Do not take aspirin, Motrin, Advil.
Then you will begin to pass pieces of the stone. It took me a month to pass them all, but some people pass them quicker. Sometimes that is uncomfortable, and sometimes not at all. Some days you might pass a few, and other days none at all. It takes time for them to all work their way out.
I know you are nervous - so was I. But, you will be just fine as the procedure is not bad. The worst part really is worrying about it before you go! I am sure some others will share their thoughts, but I am also sure they will all tell you not to worry. You will be glad when it is over and the stone is gone.

They didn't tell me anything about other organs, but I would imagine that it is finely tuned so that it is only hitting the stone and nothing else. That is why they do the x-ray - so they can pin point it. I do not think it hits a wide area, but rather a small one, being the stone. Maybe someone else can answer this better, but it is not something I worried about and to my knowledge it did not happen. Try to relax a little bit if you can. It will not be as bad as you are imagining it to be. Trust me, I worry too, and I did fine. So will you.

i questioned it but told the possibilities are so remote becuase the laser is concentrated and guided by x-ray.
Many have gone through it if you read these posts they may refer to it as ESWL or lithotripsy if this helps.

The anesthesiologist actually put me to sleep with general anesthesia for this instead of the other drug because I am allergic to demerol. It might be an option for you if you are really nervous about the litho you can ask them for that. Maybe you can ask your urologist beforehand so that he/she can be prepared for that.

Going under anesthia is always a little nervous, but the anesthologist have always made me comfortable and relaxed. You can ask them any questions. It's better to try and be relaxed as possible. I've have been under general anesthisa at least 10 times and the two side effects I've have afterward are sometimes I shake a little bit or get nauseaos afterwards. My last surgery 2 weeks ago I told the dr I got sick that prior surgery 6 weeks before and they gave me something for the nauseua during the surgery through the IV so after the surgery I was not feeling sick at all.
I find I prefer the anesthia where I am completely out versus the partial awake anesthia.
Good luck!
