hi all.;)
back in may,i was admitted to hospital, with possible stone.nothing found on x-ray,or scan.wasn't given ct though. had all signs of stone though, from unbearable back pain, going into groin, blood in urine, etc.
anyways, was discharged after 3 days, but didn't get much advice, or a proper diagnosis even. for last few days been having pain again in kidney area. is there anything my doctor can do before it ges to the unbearable stage again,or should i hang off and go to ER. i really don't want to experience pain like it again, OUCH!!
after looking on net, seems my pain may have came from renal colic. has anyone had this opposed to stones?,and how common is it to be recur ??
any advice appreciated.

Hi,
I don't really know the answer to your question. I hadn't experienced that type of pain before. I had an abdominal ct in may which didn't show any calcification in the kidneys. However, the other week, I did experence pain like that. You're right. OUCH!!
Having been humiliated at the er a couple weeks before this incidence (long story), I went ahead and gutted it out and that particular pain went away. I've been on pins and needles ever since waiting for it to strike again.
My pcp's finally back from vacation and I'm seeing him tomorrow. I plan on asking him and will let you know what he says.

I'm 21 years old and have had kidney stones... twice. Once they hit while riding my bike downhill to class, and the other time was the same day was right before I had a big exam at midnight, and had to have my sister drive me to a hospital. They were both almost EXACTLY a year away from each other. I'm approaching that one year mark and getting worried again, but I've found a way or two to deal with it...
First of all, one of my doctors prescribed me Vicodin, but that doesn't do anything to help. I took two the second time I got my kidney stones, and all it did was assure me that I couldn't drive to the hospital. I had no way to get back either because my sister had to leave for class, so I was pretty screwed.
That's when I asked a doctor what else I can take, and they said "Toradol," which is essentially like iboprofen but a much beefier version of it. It's not REALLY a prescription drug, but you can't take it for more than like three days or your kidneys will give out. But oh man, did that help me out. I was able to go to class and continue ballroom dancing (I compete and I had a big competition that weekend and was NOT going to let my dance partner down), even while it was in full force. I'd ask about that stuff, it helps a lot. Even while I'm sitting here at work I have it in my backpack... probably because I woke up with kidney pain this morning and started freaking out haha :D
But yeah that's what I'd do. Never going to a hospital again unless I have to, they screwed me over

The toradol does work like a charm but it is addictive and yes it is a prescribtion. It is not a controlled substance but insurance will not let you stockpile this drug either.
It does sound like renal colic and if I knew what you could do to help it I would be following that advice but alas I do not know. I have found that drinking carbonated liquids (be careful colas cause stones) and then bruping sometimes help but not always and not completely as the pressure is in the kidneys not the gut.

i have to take these, and then, when i get to the stage of squirming about the to visit ER. WHAT GREAT NEWS!!

Hi chelle,
It's 3:45 here now. I was playing the leg cramp game so thought I'd get up. You know, I'll take the leg cramps any day over that.
How you feeling? Did it ease up? Did you go to the er?
Thought I'd send you some sympathy and a hug. It sux that you're going thru this.

Hmmmm another one who plays the leg cramps game,......I am seeing a trend here.
Alas renal colic can come and go without warning and I know of nothing that eases the pain.

Yep. I recently read that it's quite common. And you know what really sucks? I got only got about a month in between the one year of hyper insomnia and the leg cramps kicking up. Never in my life have I had leg cramps before. One of these years I may sleep again. :(

Sounds like what I went through! I heard that renal colic can be the highest pain level known to man!
