I don't know if I have TMJ or not, but it seems like every time I go through a very stressful period my jaws (on both sides) and the glands in my neck underneath them begin to ache and tingle. It's almost like the twinge you get when you try and blow up a balloon or eat something tart. The glands don't appear to be swollen much (you can't see them) but I am more aware of them than usual. My jaw feels tense, although I don't notice that I am clenching my teeth. Maybe I do at night .. I don't know.
This came on all of a sudden this week, when I received some devastating family news. Part of me wonders if sheer stress hasn't brought it on.
Does this sound like TMJ? I am waiting to see my doctor but in the meantime am stressing myself out thinking that the glands may in fact be swollen and something more sinister is lurking.
Any other thoughts and advice are appreciated.

If it only happens when you are under stress it can be due to anxiety - anxiety can cause physical symptoms - a knot or pain in the stomach, heart palpitations, chest pains, dizziness, tightening of muscles, headaches, etc. It has to do with the adrenal glands response and the chemicals the boy produces to combat the stress. You may also be unknowingly clenching or grinding your teeth. Certainly have the swollen glands checked for any underlying infection but it could be part of your body's own mechanism to handle the duress your under. You may want to try an anti-anxiety drug - I know - its overly used and prescribed by drs when they don't find anything else wrong - but many people think anxiety is a mental dysfunction and its not - its a physical condition. Its just a thought...of course if nothing medical is found to account for your symptoms you could have a tomogram done to check your joints or have a nightguard made to see if it helps relax your muscles while sleeping.

Thanks Thelma-Louise. In the meantime I made a dr's appointment for today to talk about the stress I'm under. She prescribed an anti-anxiety drug so I am going to give it a try. She also felt my glands and said they were normal. I have a feeling it's my neck muscles at the base of the skull (under the ears) that are so tense and flaring up everything around them. I'll give the meds a chance to kick in and see where it goes.
It's interesting about the glands and other random aches and pains I've been getting: if I'm not thinking about them I don't notice them. I guess that should tell me something. :)

You might want to try massage therapy - if some of this is due to stress causing your muscles to tighten up a massage or physcial therapist may be able to help quite a bit
