Hey all-
Thought I'd check in and let you know how surgery went. I was suppossed to start at 10 but they didn't end up starting until 11:30. I was getting nervous in the pre op room so my anesthiologist gave me some versed which made me sleepy. Next thing I knew, I was being wheeled into the or. They put some oxygen on my face and I asked the anesthiologist when we were starting. He said "we already did".. I guess I must have passed out because when I opened my eyes again i had the oxygen over my face and I was being wheeled to recovery. I was in a bit of pain so they gave me some dilaudid and some anti nauseau drugs as well. The only issue I had was a high heart rate. It was going from 100 to 140 quite a bit and they decided to moniter me for a while. My surgeon decided to admit me for the night but I was in recovery for a good 7 hrs while they ran tests. They just wanted to rule out any internal bleeding so they took blood tests 4 times. I was pretty much out of it but was sooooo thirsty, since I hadn't had anything to drink since the night before. The nurse gave me some ice chips but it I was dying for some water! My throat was also sore from the tube during surgery and I had to cough alot, which they say is good for you, since it expands the lungs. If anyone goes thru this, my advice is to hold a pillow to your chest and cough. It makes it easier. Finally they let me out of recovery and into my own hospital room where my family and husband were waiting. My room was great. The bed was so much more comfy then the other one i was laying in and they finally let me walk around. I felt so much better walking because the gas in my shoulders and side would go away. I didn't sleep to well because every hour someone would come in and take my temp or blood pressure. Plus I had to sleep with those massagers on my legs (for blood clots) and they kept me up. Finally this morning, my dr came in to check on me and said they are running one more blood test and if all is good, I am outta there. So I am back home now, drinking tons of gatorade. I don't have that much pain at all. Just some gas pain, and neck pain but it is nothing compared to the attacks I would have. I'm gonna try and go rest now but will keep you all posted on how I'm doing. Hope all is well.

Good news! Glad things are going well. You're right about not getting any sleep in the hospital...it's no place for a sick person!

Take care and keep us posted....and NO FAT in your diet.

I am so glad that it is over for you! Yeah, when I had mine, I woke up and thought I had dreamt going into the OR, so I was like waiting for them to start, but then I coughed, adn felt the pain, and knew it was over. They had to give me a ton of nausea meds before, during, and after, and three shots for pain while I was in recovery.
Hope that the pain is manageable for you!! The worst is behind you now!! Hope you can get plenty of rest. For me, teh wrost was when I would forget to set an alarm to take my meds, and would wake up after they had completely worn off, and then it would take FOREVER to start working again.
Good luck!!

3 days post op and I still can't really eat anything solid. I have had some applesauce and mostly gatorade, gingerale and water. I still feel nauseaus, I actually threw up last night but stil managed to sleep thru the night with the help of a klonopin. I was also running a low grade fever yesterday of about 99. Does anyone know if this is normal? Also, were any of you able to eat right away? I can't fathom eating anything right now. The gas pains have subsided thankfully so I am able to lie on my side more comfortably. I am making sure to cough as much as possible to clear my lungs and also walk as much as i can. I hope this gets better and I am able to eat soon. I really don't feel like relying on liquids. Anyone else in the same position after getting their gb's out?

Nanarich1- to answer your question, they weren't sure why my heart was racing, but they said it could be a number of things. I take anti-anxiety meds, so they thought it could have been that. Also, they said anesthisia and surgery is a shock to the body that can send the heartrate up considerably. I think they were most concerned with internal bleeding, which is why they left me in recovery for 7 hrs. My surgeon had them do several blood tests to make sure I wasn't losing blood anywhere. Once all my test came back clean and my heartrate stabilizied, I was allowed to go to my hospital room.

hope you are all well..

I was extremely nauseous for a few days after I had GB surgery. Dr. told me it was probably from the anesthesia and to drink lots of fluids to get it out of my system faster. I could barely eat anything except crackers, gatorade and a banana for breakfast for the first couple of days. The nausea subsided to a tolerable level (I also have gastritis) about the 4th or 5th day post surgery. Unfortunately then I was just dealing with diarrhea after that! It was pretty rough.

I also had the racing heartrate and my blood pressure was low so I couldn't leave the hospital until my heartrate and blood pressure were back to normal.

good to hear you are ok!

I was scheduled to have mine out next week but the surgeon had an opening so I had it done wednesday morning. I was very nervous going in and my blood pressure was high....I remember getting wheeled into surgery and my heart was just pounding (i've never had surgery at all before) I had the anesthesia through the iv drip so I had no mask. the next thing i knew I was waking up in the recovery room. I was in a fair amount of pain so they gave me something in my iv and after 20 minutes or so I was taken back to my room. There they checked my blood pressure periodically. It came down as I got settled. I wasn't in much pain laying down so I didn't feel like moving too much. I laid there feeling sleepy for about 4 hours or so then they got me ready to come home. I have been sleeping on and off since then. the shoulder and neck pain from the gas has actually been the worst part for me, luckily it goes away when i sit down and recline my chair. the only other pain happens when I lay down and it hurts to take deep breaths (in the region where my gallbladder was) but that fades quickly once i have been laying down for a few minutes. I have only had juice since coming home. no solid foods yet. I don't feel nauseous, but I have been gassy and did have a bit of diarrhea. my throat is also a little sore so i'm sucking on a lot of ice. I'm not even feeling the need for the pain pills at this point, although i may take one before bed for another day or two. well thats my story so far. hope you continue to do well. Those who are considering the surgery or are already scheduled, good luck and do your best to stay relaxed!

Scotty-
glad to hear things went well with your surgery. I have not really needed pain meds either..i'm just relying on tylenol which seems to do the trick. Yesterday was the first day I ate something solid, which was two pieces of toast. I know it's not much but at least it's a start.. The gas in my shoulders is completely gone and my pain from the wounds gets better everyday. I literally couldn't even cough without wincing, but it is so much better now. Make sure you do try and cough as it will open up your lungs which is really good for you. Also, if you have pain while coughing, try holding a pillow on your stomach. It worked wonders for me. I sneezed last nite and thought my stomach was going to explode, but then remembered the nurse telling me that you literally have to do backflips to open up the wounds. I've had some diarhea this morning and a little bit of heartburn but I think it's because I have only drank liquids for 4 days. Keep me posted on your recovery.. take care!!
