Hi, I posted my story yesterday. I was told by Dr. Dolwick in Gainesville, Florida that I need a total Joint Replacement. I have had a past surgery with him and feel comfortable with his ability BUT I would like a second and maybe third opinion. I have read that the more surgeries you have had the less chance of a successful joint replacement operation. This would be my 3rd surgery. Can anyone suggest another dr? I dont mind traveling.
Thank you in advance!

I have no experience with joint replacement surgery but have been on the boards for some time - try and do an advanced search on the tmj forum for a dr in Boston, MA ( I think) - the member highly recommended him for joint replacement surgery. I think I may have written his name down and I will look for it since I was thinking of eventually having to travel as well. If I can't find it I will try to search for the old post as well. Have you checked the Great TMJ Dr thread posted at the top of the forum? The member may have posted it there.

I found it - it was a Dr Allen Tarro in the Boston area. Maybe you could do some research on what his specialty is. Did you happen to notice there is a dr in VA at VCU listed in the Great TMJ dr thread? Thought that might be a bit closer but again not sure what his specialty is. Some surgeons do it all and some limit themselves to only certain types.

Hi, I cant tell you how much I appreciate this. I will contact them both. Never thought to ask them their specialties. I have seen the same 2 drs for so long and put 100% into my relationship with them. Getting a variety of opinions is new territory for me. My problems started when a surgeon did a "bad" surgery on me so I am nervous to even visit someone else. Thanks for your time and if you think of anything else, please let me know. I hope that you feel okay and are getting relief somewhere. All the best, Ellen

Hi Thelma, I could not find any TMJ specialist in Richmond; whom do you refer too? Thank you so much

Unfortunately I can not personally refer or recommend a specific dr in Richmond VA as I have never been to drs outside of NY and CT (so far) to treat my tmj. However other members here and on the Dental problem forum seem to think highly of Dr. J Tregaskes and Dr Daniel Laskin, both in Richmond, but again I have had no contact or experience with either dr.
If you have not done so yet, you may want to check the first sticky post at the top of this forum entitled "Great TMJ Drs" to see if you can find one in your area - as these are member referrals. You may also want to do an advanced search on this forum on the word "Richmond" to see if any posts are found that may refer to drs there.
Also contact any dental schools like the University of MD and see if they can provide a referral to a dr in your area or search the nat'l orgs of myofacial pain, orofacial pain, functional jaw orthotics and tmj as many list members (doctors) by city and state. I believe these sites can be found in a sticky post at the top of this forum as well.
Keep in mind even a "great" dr or one based on a referral may not be the right dr for you - there are many factors to consider such as their theory or approach in treating tmj as well as their bedside manner, their fees and billing process (do they accept insurance or not?), the amt of time they have to spend with you (some teach and are only available 2-3 days a week - eek!) and so on so its important that you go through the process of having several consults with various drs - preferrably with thoses that do not know each other - and then take all factors into account before deciding which dr may be right for you.
Jill Mitchell previously posted a summary of some great questions and info on how to choose a dr and what questions to ask, etc. that may help you - you can probably do an Advanced search on her name to find them.
I hope that helps and wish you luck on your search.:)
