Hi All,
In about mid-May, I started having daily headaches in the back of my neck that were mild/dull and what would probably be described as "tension" headaches, as they often had the "headband" type pain that went with them, in my temples. They occurred at any time of the day, with no particular pattern, and weren't affected by work or strain. I also had some nerve pain in my neck (an occasional superficial tingling-type sensation). I went to a chiropractor on June 18th, and he took X-rays, and also used another scanner that shows what problems might exist in the nerves and muscles around the spinal column. Between the two, he found that the bones in my cervical area were a bit off, and was actually pinching the nerves in the area. Since then, he has worked on it, and has been able to get the headaches that I had to go away.
However, I have developed some other symptoms in the meantime, and I am not sure if they are related or not. For one, I have a sensation of "fullness" in my left ear; no noticeable hearing loss, only a sensation like there is pressure in the area. That has been going on almost constantly, and daily, for near a month now. It does wane sometimes where it seems like it's not as bad, but it's usually about the same. Also, when I put my finger in my left ear, I can feel the joint moving and it's almost as though the joint is gliding up into my finger or something - I'm not quite sure how to describe it, but I can hear a popping noise like the bone is rubbing against something it shouldn't be, and I think that something is definitely not right, and indeed, when I do the same in the right ear, it feels "normal." (or as though I think normal should feel :) ) For a while, I was getting a popping/clicking noise when I opened my jaw, and when I moved my jaw in certain ways. I told my chiropractor about that, and he seems to have fixed that part, but the fullness of ear remains.
Second, I have some pain in the back of my neck, which feels like a kind of dull muscle ache, but it only occurs when I move my head to the right, left, or up (it isn't constant). But it does sometimes seem to lead to headache pain in my temples, similar to the original headaches I had, but not in the back of the neck. Only in the temples, and also, occasionally with the temple pain, I have pain in the sinus area between my eyes and behind my eyes, also seemingly stemming from this neck pain. This pain behind my eyes often gives me the sensation of drowsiness... not that I am really tired, but I feel like I am, because it feels better when I close my eyes. These symptoms of sinus and neck pain are only temporary, and seem to go away when I take an ibuprofen or tylenol - they are not constant like the original headaches. At most, I suffer from them only three to four hours daily, even if I don't take anything for them - almost always in the evening (anywhere from 4 to 9, usually).
Third, I've noticed daily for about the last month (maybe before, too, I didn't start paying attention until then), that my nasal passages are often blocked. Not enough usually to cause trouble breathing, but one is closed, and the other isn't, and it switches back and forth. Most often, the stuffed nostril is my left side, though - rarely are both open. Occasionally, both are plugged and I feel the need to breath through my mouth. There have been a couple mornings where I had to blow my nose when I got up, but that is the only congestion I have had over the time period.
Finally, I also have some tingling sensations that continue, either on my scalp or in the back of my neck. They don't last very long, and don't happen real often.
At my chiropractor's suggestion, I've made an appointment with an ENT... but that isn't until August 10th, and I would really like to get any suggestions, or comments you might have. I am kind of worried about it.
Does anyone have any ideas??
Thanks very much for your time!

Hello there
I am in the same boat as you. I herniated the c5/c6 disc in my neck back in October and ever since then I have constant ear fullness. Like the feeling of liquid cement or glue in my ears. I have NO hearing problems.
I have been to all the doctors. ENT said TMJ, jaw disfunction and or neck related muscle-type problems can cause ear fullness.
At the time I has assumed it would just go away and it hasn't. When I put my fingers in my ear and close my jaw it feels like my jaw is pushing up into my ears . I had an MRI of my jaw done and the doctor said everything looks normal.
My neck, upper back, and trap muscles have all been a problem for me and I have tried tons of massage and heat but NOTHING alleviates the ear fullness.
I have not been able to unravel this problem with my ears and am afraid that it will just last forever. My constant ear fullness causes me anxiety.
hope yours clears up soon! keep stretching! and keep posting your progress!

Hey Frodoh,
Thanks for the reply!
Yeah, I'm not sure what I have. The tingling sensations around my head are kind of worrisome for me right now. I had them a few weeks ago, and my chiropractor said they are likely from the adjustments he made, because the muscles, nerves and ligaments have to readjust, but I'm not sure why it's still doing it, weeks later.
From other things I read, I've seen that TMJ can cause many of these symptoms... but I'm not sure.
Thanks for your input, and I hope yours gets better, too!

The part you mention where you put your fingers in your ears and can feel the joint moving, popping, etc indicates its tmj - that what most specialists do when examinging you as well - some even uses a stethis (sp?) scope like MDs use to listen for it. The chiro is probably right - the tingling is either from his adjustment or that your neck is slightly out of alignment and pressing on nerves. I think you would be better off seeing a tmj specialist than an ENT - the ear fullness and sinus congestion is from inflamation from the tmj. Have you tried OTC anti-inflamatory meds or decongestants - that may help some.

Hi Thelma-Louise,
No, I haven't tried taking much for it yet, because I don't really know what it is for sure.
The ENT was kind of a lucky thing, actually. I don't have an ENT that I know, but my dad happened to go to his, and he was mentioning about me and my symptoms, and the doctor said it sounded like it could be TMJ and that he would see me - he's not even taking new patients right now, so I figured I would at least give it a shot! :)
Thanks again!

I can almost guarantee you that the ENT will be of no help and that it will all just have to work itself out over time. There's no surgery for TMJ except in rare cases and as I understand it things can be made worse.

Hey all...
Quick update - I went and had an MRI done - nothing came back, except apparently I have something in my sinuses. Not sure what yet, and how that is related to the other symptoms.
Thanks much,
God bless,
Jeff

I also have sinus symptoms w/ my TMJ. I had an MRI done with my ENT a while back too. The report from the radiologist said something like "right maxillary sinus disease..." or cysts or something. It must've been inconsequential because my ENT didn't even mention it - I stumbled across it weeks later after getting a copy of the report myself. Of course at that time, we were looking for a tumor / acoustic neuroma.

Hi loudawg
That's exactly what my MRI said... right maxillary sinus disease.
I'll have to wait and see what the ENT says, I guess. My neck pain has been getting a little better the last few days, and my chiropractor said he believes that pain is related to the sinus problem, because he said that everything is lined up in my neck.
More soon! Thanks all for the input!

Hey Chat9998,
Let me know what your ENT says and if they pursue a specific treatment for it. I don't really see my ENT too often these days more Physical Therapy, Massage Therapy and Dentist.
Thanks.

Hey all - quick update -
Went to ENT last Wednesday, he ordered a CAT scan, and a pressure test for my ear - that is scheduled for this Wednesday. He didn't say much about the TMJ, but jaw has been locking sometimes the last two weeks or so. I will mention it to him when I go back. Otherwise, many of my symptoms have started to disappear, however, I still have pain in my neck when I move it in a certain way, stuffed nose, and the jaw pain/locking I mentioned. Also, the last three of four weeks, every time I am at church, I notice that I start to sweat and kind of feel like I am going to faint. Not sure if that's related or what - it only happens there.
Thanks!
God bless,
Jeff
