View Full Version : I have a Gall Bladder Polyp = Possible Cancer??

Just got my ultrasound results back from the GI Doctor - he says I may have a polyp on my gall bladder. I have an appointment with him next Thursday. Should I be concerned? I've read where gall bladder cancer is very rare, and that only the larger polyps are potentially cancerous. The fact he said I "may" have a polyp leads me to believe it could be something else, but what? I'm sure we'll discuss additional testing that needs to be done to confirm exactly what's going on. I've been having mid back pain over the past 6-8 weeks, and I'm wondering if this could have been the reason, or just coincidence.

Does anyone have any experience with a situation like this, or have any insight gall bladder polyps, or what this could possibly be? Thanks.

When I had my ultrasound, five months ago, they reported that they thought I had a polyp of 5mm, however they also hedged by by stating that it might be a gallstone that was stuck to the wall of the gallbladder. Apparently there are several different forms of gallstones, some may be harder to detect with an ultrasound. From what I have read they are concerned when the polyps measure over 1cm due to the possible connection to cancer, which is very rare as you state.

I have had various kinds of symptoms that apparently relate to the gallbladder, including intermittent pain in the mid back, intermittent pain under the ribs, right shoulder pain, occasional heart palpitations, etc. I flunked the HIDA scan with a score of 23%.

Currently I am being treated with Ursodiol, which is used to dissolve some types of stones and "sludge"; it has reduced the symptoms--especially the pain under the ribs, though still will feel some short term minor twinges after eating a meal containing fat. My GI also has me taking large quantities of fish oil.
