I have grinded my teeth since a child now 36. Did alot of damage to the teeth over the yrs. I am scheduled to have the rest of my teeth extracted next month. I did inform the oral surgeon about all that was going on with my jaw making popping noises, clicking and sometimes I cant even open my mouth its like locked. He was very brief in saying the extractions could relieve the symptoms I am experiencing. My question here has anyone who had full mouth extractions find any relief from their tmj? I am just scared when i do get dentures that i will grind - yes i know they come out at night but I clench pretty bad during the day.
Since the oral surgeon was vague on this I dont know who I should be talking to about this.

Maybe you should go get another opinion. I have been told by numerous drs that going to dentures could make it worse. My current dr told me there are 2 schools of opinions on this - some say it can help b/c the dentures can be made to correct a poor bite - others feel it can make things worse by changing the bite too much, changing the space or vertical height within the mouth and strain the tm joints, causes bone recession, etc. Unless there are no other options in saving or fixing your teeth I wouldn't recommend it - of course I realize the cost of fixing badly damaged teeth can be a hinderance as well, and that can have an impact on your decision. Who is doing the dentures - I would speak with them about your concerns of continued grinding or clenching. I know one dr I did see about possibly going to dentures said he insisted all his patients that wore dentures also wear a nightguard - maybe that might help.

Thx Thelma for getting back. At this point there is no saving my teeth. To fix them it would be equivalent to buying a brand new car as is with no gurantee.
I have a dentist I had to see for the dentures. He did the impressions. I did mention I grinded my teeth but he really didnt say anything just as the oral surgeon. I will call him Monday and go over my concerns with the dentist. Because I want this pain in my jaw (popping/cracking/locked) feelins to go away and don't want the denture to make it worse.
Thx agn
