hey all-
i'm 5 days post op and while i'm feeling much better, I am having diarrhea and wondering if this is normal. I am eating bland foods (toast, soup, etc.. ) but still it won't stay down. Just wondering if this was normal and if anyone has experienced this.
thanks!

You should not be on a bland diet. You should be on a fat free diet. There is a huge difference.

HI !
I had that problem for about 10 days, and then it went away. I stayed on a strict fat free diet for about one month.
However, I have developed reflux of some sort in the last year and I am thinking it may all be related.
Hope you heal soon. :)

I had the same problem for quite a while. I would say for about 2 weeks post surgery. I still do have diarrhea every now and then if I eat something I shouldn't (fatty, oily or spicy). I agree...fat-free for a while till your body adjusts.

How are you doing? I hope that you are healing well, and that you are feeling much better! I am so glad that mine is out! I had mine out in April of this year, and cannot believe how long it has been. Time flies. I do recommend using vitamin e cream to help the scars. My scars were red up until like two weeks ago, when I started using the cream. But I wouldn't use it until you get your staples/stitches or whatever out, and the scabs are gone.
I never had the problem with the "dumping" syndrome, so I don't know what to tell you. Well, one thing that might have stopped that, was that I was so sick afterwards, that I was placed on a liquid diet for a little while. Hopefully they won't have to do that to you. I was the dummy who tried eating country fried steak like right after though, which made me horribly sick, and the doctor put me on all liquids. I think he was teaching me a lesson...I sure learned fast.
Hope you start feeling much better really soon! How is the pain? Hope that it is bearable!!

hey.. I am feeling a bit better everyday except that my body won't hold any food in.. I ate half a bagel with jam today and sure enough, it came right back out. I'm just confused and a bit frustrated. How do you know if you have "dumping" syndrome or not? Is it something that happens right away? Or is diarrhea normal right after surgery? The day after surgery I managed to have a solid stool but now everything is liquid.. just not sure what to think. Could it be nerves? Anyways, hope all is well with everyone. Any answers anyone has would be great. thanks all.

I just had my gallbladder out 3 weeks ago and it seems like the first day after the surgery I had a normal stool in the morning, but had diarrhea after ever meal for about a week, sometimes it would come about even during a meal, so I had to rush to the bathroom. Around week 2 it started getting better, but I still have been eating only soups, crackers, grilled chicken and vegetables, bread, etc. Now at week 3 I am still having diarrhea, but it doesn't seem as bad as before. Then again, this week I haven't been eating much, so we'll see what happens once I start eating solid foods.

thanks cindyrose-
It's just so frustrating and it only happens when i eat something, whether it's low fat or bland.. i just hope i don't have the bile salt diarrhea thing. I paged my dr at the hospital and his associate called me back and asked what kind of diahrrea i was having, if it was explosive or not. I really don't know what the difference is.. I guess I'm gonna wait it out and see what happens. Hope you are doing well..

Hey. having diarreah after your gallbladder is removed is supposedly a normal thing. I have heard of people having it for several weeks to even months after gb surgery. I hope that it doesn't last to long. You might try asking your doctor for something that will stop it. Eat a lot of fiber as well, and it should help quite a bit. I really hope that you can find something that helps you. My doctor gave me a prescription for something when I had diareah, but I am not sure what it was. I didn't have a problem with it after the surgery though, just before. Then again, I had a plethera of other issues, such as kidney stones that came right after, and being on the narcotics since April, it kinda balances that out, as narcotics constipate you. Hopefully in August, tehy will have me all fixed up, and I can get off of the blasted things once and for all. I am having two kidney stone removals. Fun fun. but, if the kidney stones aren't the problem, I don't know what I am going to do. Sorry, didn't mean to ramble, but I hope I gave you some useful info. Good luck!

i'm sorry to hear that you are having other issues, especially kidney stones. I actually heard that the pain of that is worse than a gb attack.. although, I can't imagine anything worse.. I have only been taking tylenol for the pain and I hardly even need it because the pain has subsided so much since last tuesday when i had surgery. I was contemplating taking vicodin but never fared well with those pain killers, now, i wish i was constipated. Not wish... but you know what i mean.. i'm gonna try and have some mashed potatoes for dinner and see how that goes.. if not I guess i'm sticking to white rice since that was the only thing that stayed down.. sucks what we have to go through to feel better, but i guess it's all worth it.. :) hope you are well.. thanks for always answering my posts..

Hey! I am glad that you found something that would stay. Even if it is one of the blandest foods in the world. I really hope that you can find somethign to help. I am glad that you aren't in a lot of pain anymore.
Yeah, kidney stones are no fun. I had some removed in May, right after the gallbladder surgery, but they left a lot in there, in the kidneys. So, getting all of them out hopefully will do the trick. I really don't know which is worse, the gallbladder attacks or the kidney stone pain. Neither one are any fun to deal with. At least I know I will never have another gallbladder attack, whereas the stones can keep coming back. I am going to the Mayo Clinic on Thursday, so hopefully they canget me all straightened out there, and figure out where all of this pain is coming from, if it isn't the stones.
Hope that pretty soon you will be 100%. Have a great day!!
