So my son was just recently diagnosed A.D.H.D. after struggling with him for 3 years. He is about to be 6, and in his previous class, an E.C. class for special needs children, he was suspended 3 times due to his behavior. Now we have switched his doctor and he was prescribed Vyvanse. Now before vyvanse, my son was very abusive, angry, outraged, and antigonostic to his sister. My son would beat any animal, hit any person without any care, destroy property, vehicles, or anything that he could his hands on, without any cause or prevocation. He has been on vyvanse for approximately two weeks now and I'm at a loss. While the hitting has subsided, my son NEVER sleeps anymore and when he does, it is for maybe 2-4 hours at night and he's right back up first thing in the morning. I cannot sleep until I know he does because he likes to go outside, climb things to reach items he's not supposed to, and all sorts of things. It's like he's on an all time high that never ends now. It's really strange and I don't know what to do or what to ask his doctor or anything. I have had complete strangers ask me if he's bi-polar, but I don't think that is it. My son doesn't appear to have downs at all now. Is this the medication alone? Do I need to stop giving it to him and tell his doctor? I feel as if I am manic now with the loss of sleep, I can't imagine how he's feeling. I just don't know what to do.

I'm confused, was he origninally diagnosed with Downs and recently diagnosed with ADHD? These are not really symptoms of Downs so I can't imagine why he would have been diagnosed with that. What you are describing does sound like a reaction to the medication, I'd call the doc right away and tell him the symptoms, some ADHD medications can make kids hyper. It doesn't really sound like bi-polar either (from what I know of it). Because those include really high high's and really low lows...I think you'd notice. Though the aggression can be found in some bi-polar patients. As I understand it there are lots of meds for ADHD and it is kinda like the birth control pill, you have to just keep trying until one suits you. Good luck!

It sounds like a bad medication reaction along with sleep deprivation effects. I would talk to the doctor and get sleep apnea ruled out by a sleep specialist. If you give a child that is exhibiting ADHD signs that are the result of sleep deprivation induced by sleep apnea.. bad side effects occur and the symptoms amplify no matter the medication. I had four pediatricians and my sons teachers try and pigeon hole my son as ADHD, he had severe sleep apnea. Most children can be cured of sleep apnea by removal of the tonsils and adnoids.
Get an evaluation of your son done by a sleep specialist and tell your MD and pharmacist about the reactions your son is exxhibiting to the medications.
Sincerely,
MG
