I am married with three little ones. I have had panic attacks on and off for most of my life, but just in the past two years they have been uncontrollable.
I have tried several types of meds. but none seem to work. I have a hard time sleeping at night and some days I feel like I am in a constant state of panic. Can anyone give me some advice on what could help me?

You sound just like me, although my little ones aren't so little anymore. :)

I'm going to be 40 this year and had my first attack at 17. They became less frequent for awhile, but then got really bad when I was 30. Then they stopped completely for about 8 years. Two years ago, I had the worst one ever. I don't do well on medication, so don't take any.

I can tell you some things that work for me...none are meds.

Tension Tamer Tea by Celestial Seasonings works great. I drink a cup evey morning to calm me down before my day even starts.

I use aromatherapy...burn candles, essential oils, whatever. The smell of lavender, ylang ylang, and for some reason cinnamon and pumpkin calms me down.

I have a small water fountain in my bedroom for when I can't sleep..the trickling sound of water is very relaxing.

Rescue Remedy by Bach's works great for me. You can find it online.

I listen to spa music at work and at home...I particularly like the ones that have nature sounds in the background.

Meditation is great too, although it's difficult to find the time when you have kids! I found a wonderful CD on Amazon called something like "Your Present: A Half Hour of Peace. It's a guided meditation CD.

I hope some of that helps!

Lexapro has been the best drug of all the medicine I've taken in the past. It seem to take affect quickly, where others take an average of three weeks. Best thing to do is talk with your doctor (I asked my OB GYN). Also, with three littles ones, you could be tired, stressed out, hormones out of wack, etc. It could be a number of things causing these attacks and an understanding Dr. can usually nip them in the bud. If you do start medicine, never stop it cold-turkey. Withdrawal can make you feel worse. Hope this helps.
