View Full Version : Rash That Won't go Away

Hi. My 9 month old daughter has had a rash for the last 4 weeks. At first it looked like the diaper could have been rubbing against her skin and causing irritation, but it just hasn't gone away. We called the doctor 2 weeks ago and he said use hydrocortisone for a few days. We did and it was slightly better but we still wanted it looked at so we took her in. Doc didn't seem too concerned. Well, after using hydrocortisone and zinc oxide for 10 days it still hasn't gone away and looks slightly worse. Called the doc again Tuesday and they said keep using the topicals 7 more days. I'm getting concerned, even tho baby doesn't seem bothered by it, there's no fever and no signs of infection. It's located at the base of the abdomen where it meets the pubic region and is in the shape of a triangle with the point facing down. It's pinkish with slight white on the inside. Has anyone else had a similar experience? I've read every book I have and looked at tons of pictures on the internet and just can't figure it out. Any insight is greatly appreciated!

The only thing I would think of is just a small heat rash from her diaper - or the diaper rubbing her in that area.

Eczema could also be another thing to look at, but I believe that often spreads to other areas. However, it might start in one area and later spread. I had eczema on my one finger for years and all the sudden I have a patch on my knee.

my baby had a yeast infection that was located in close to the same area... unusual for a yeast rash to start out there, but it apparently does happen! might be worth checking out?

It's sounding just like what my 7.5 dd has! we've been watching it for 2 weeks now and trying to put diaper creme on it. seems to subside sometimes and then reappear. it's exactly as you describe--it almost, the area right ontop of her pubic bone has a welt. it is white on the inside and the red surrounds it. i'm calling doc on monday if nothing has changed...i have a feeling they'll try to have me just use creams but i want to be seen...not just have a phone conversation. also, the area where her stomach and diaper meet have a different sort of rash...more like a diaper rash...splotchy..not raised. what type of diapers do you use? we use cruisers.

It could be an allergy to the diaper materials, heat rash, and the other sources you have been informed. I would get your doctor to check it over and maybe try a different type of diaper. My sister in law had to break down and do cotton do to skin irritation and allergies. That gets messy and really drives one to potty train ASAP.

Sincerely,
MG

I agree with the previous poster that said it could be yeast. Our ped. recommends using lotrimin. We have also gotten perscriptions for Nystatin.

Thanks so much for all of your replies. Manchak, we use cruisers too. Please let me know what your doc says. I was thinking of picking up a different brand of diaper and giving it a try. Thankfully, we have her 9-month checkup next week so I'll have him look at it again. I bought a brand new tube of cortisone and that with the balmex is making it better, but still not gone.

Well, I just took my DD to the ped. The daycare called me and said they couldn't tell if it was pussing or not. So....after JUST dropping her off, I went to pick her up, got an appt with the pediatrician and we now know what it is. It's a fungal/yeast infection. It wasn't pussing but it was spreading so we're not to use Lotrimin and if that doesn't work i got a prescription for something stronger. Air dry before you put the creme on and before the diaper. I'll let you know how it goes. I'm also switching diapers i think...but it is strange...we've been with Pampers since day 1 and now why would Cruisers be any different material than Swaddlers?

I'll post on Monday and please keep me posted as to what your dr says next week.

Hi--took DD to the pediatrician today for her 9-month checkup. It was a great visit, and I showed him the rash. It's all but gone at this point, but you can still see a faint discoloration where it was. He said it was most likely irritation combined with the heat (it's been pretty hot and humid here for about the past 3-4 weeks). He didn't seem concerned about it, but also recommended Lotrimin.

Manchak, I think there is a Swaddlers size that fits up to 24 or 28 pounds. I'm not certain, but I was in the store the other day and saw one that I thought may work on my DD (she's a little over 16 pounds).
