Hi, it's been almost one year since my original awful attack of labyrinthitis that led into BPPV or Positional Vertigo. I have never really been free from the positional vertigo since my attack on Aug. 31, 2006. I was tested and diagnosed with BPPV by an otorhinolaryngologist who performed the Epley Maneuver on me after my diagnosis, my symptoms drastically improved immediately, it was great! But they have slowly crept back! I experience the spinning sensation when I look up, when I look down, and mostly when I'm rolling from side to side in bed. He performed a second Epley Maneuver last week, with no improvements. He suggested I start vestibular rehabilitation since BPPV should not be a chronic condition.

I'm starting to get concerned and really sick and tired of spinning! Why would this be lasting so long? Does anyone know of an underlying cause for this? Or has anyone experienced this lingering positional vertigo? Any suggestions on how to cope or what to do? Thanks!!

Have you looked into or did your Dr. Suggest you try the Modified Epeley Manoeuver at home? On the first post on the board (the sticky) there is a video of the MEP which you can perform off the end of the bed and work the crystals back where they belong yourself.
I had a bad case of BPPV which my doctor did not diagnose and figured it out on my own, I learned about the MEP and after two MEPs in the same day it was gone. It may recurr for some people, but doing the MEP can put things right again. I would seriously suggest looking into that as you can very easily fix it yourself and it can't do any more harm than is already going on there.
Hope you manage to work this out, i know where you are coming from and once I learned about the MEP I felt a huge weight come off my shoulders,
Good luck

Subs and Firechick, thanks so much for your replies, Subs, you helped me get to U of Penn last year, thank you, you are also my neighbor! I'm so glad for the support here. I will definitely try doing the maneuvers at home, it just makes me a little nervous that I will make things worse. I guess I should just go to therapy as well. I am 36, hate to see what will happen to my ears in 20years! Thanks so much for your help. I'm grateful to have this site!!

Hi Memiero

Yes---normally one(VRT's) would be prescribed---along with the Epley---since it is a two step process----get "Rocks" out of canal---(may take more then one Epley--did for me/F.C. & others)---then do the VRT's that provide the brain the opportunity/movements to/that redo the balance calculations---some get by with only the Epley/MEP---most do not.....

Doc is right---BPPV---is not a chronic condition---but---since the "Rocks"---can be more of a "Slurry" (then one or two "solid" rocks)---can take a couple(or more) Epleys/MEP's to clear....and then recalculate the brain's balance calculations---if u know which side "its" on---and watch the MEP Video(#2) & follow the insturctions---and have someone watch u do it first couple of times---should be ok---but---u can call ur Doc---and ask---him/her---if they have any problem.....

In any case---with BPPV---all that recurrent vertigo means---is---some of the rocks---have slip back into the canals---not unusual.....as for the:

..." hate to see what will happen to my ears in 20years!"....

Once the rocks(Slurry) is out---u should be ok---since BPPV is not a chronic condition.....
