Me and my boyfriend were just discussing that if i do have oral herpes..that i cant get genital herpes. because i was worried that he might have oral too (or that i possibly got it from him) and i didnt want to also get genital herpes from him giving me oral sex. but he said i cant get both. is this true? seems odd to me..but i thought id ask.

Well... To try to answer your question, yes, you can get genital herpes from someone with oral via oral sex. The virus is passed through physical contact. Type 1 is generally oral, however, it can be passed to the genitals of a partner through the contact of oral sex. Type 2 is generally genital, however it can also be passed as oral through oral sex via contact with the site.

There is a slight diffence between the type 1 and type 2 viruses. The idea that type 1 is always oral and type 2 is always genital is a misconception. It is my understanding (and correct me if I'm wrong, those of you with more knowledge on the subject) that if you have type 1, your chances of contracting type 2 are lessened, but it's still possible, and some people do have both types 1 and 2.

Best thing for you both would be to get tested (if you haven't already, and it didn't sound like you have), and also to read up on the subject. There's a lot of info just on this site, and lots more on the web. Stop guessing. You're playing with fire, and at the rate you're going, one or both of you is going to get burned.

Ok thank you for your response. But im not really "guessing" because i just found out this could be a problem today. So im simply asking a question because thats what these boards are for. I didnt even think of having any type of herpes at all till today so no ones playing with fire just yet. Im simply asking because ive been having something on my lip and i dont know what the heck it is. my boyfriend thinks it looks like oral herpes but i really dont know much about cold sores because ive never had one and ive seen them and this looks nothing like one. but ive heard they could be different looking.
