Does anyone know how you can tell the difference of TMJ or Trigeminal Neuralgia. They have the same exact symptoms so how do you know which one you have? I have had pain in my upper cheek and jaw and teeth. It comes and goes all day long. I looked up stuff on the internet and TMJ and Trigeminal Neuralgia have the exact same symtoms. My problem started after I had surgery. I noticed my jaw started to click and now all these pains. Mindy

I had the same question but I think I solved it. Trigeminal neuralgia is like a sharp shooting pain in the facial nerves and while a major part of TMD is also facial pain there are additional symptoms which differenciate it such as clicking sounds on opening your jaw, wear patterns on the teeth etc.

Before I realised that I actually had a TMD issue I was told by a neurologist that I had neuralgia so I had to go out there and educate myself.
