I have to make this short as I am taking care of my little guy. I am looking for a FREE INPATIENT Rehab in Ontario for my Father who is an alcoholic. I have tried ******ing it in, but found nothing. He has told my Mom that he will not do the 12 step - AA rehab because he believes it does not work for him. I think it just might be an excuse not to go. So I'm thinking if I can find one that is not the 12 steps (and free and we're on a very fixed budget) that MAYBE he'll look into it. I know he wants help.
I really hope somebody knows of something. We live in Mississauga, Ontario - near Toronto.
Thank you so much for your time!!

- LizThere's a problem there: You think he's making excuses to not do 12 step programs, but you "know he wants help." I just don't buy that both those things are true.
There are people for whom 12 step programs don't work, and it is not because the people aren't willing to work. Some people are simply unwilling to go through the ego deflation of 12 step work.
Most importantly, get yourself into some kind of support. The contradictory nature of your statement screams to me that somehow you think getting your father sober is somehow something you have power over. It's not. I would suggest finding some alanon meetings. Just because your dad won't do 12 step work, doesn't mean you can't get some help from groups that use the format.

I don't know if it's an excuse not to go or if it truthfully doesn't work for him.
I know I have no power over his addiction and I know I have no power over his recovery.
I know all about Alanon. I have been going through this with my family my whole life & I have been in couceling for myself for plenty of years.
I know he wants to get help because he's said so, he's willing to do out patient & he absolutely HATES what he does and has been doing for over 40 years to himself & to his family.
All I want to know is if anyone knows of any free inpatient rehabs located in Ontario. I am very education about addiction and recovery. I don't need anyone telling me to go and get help as I already am. This thread was started in hopes that someone would know if a rehab that I can show to my Father.
Please don't be so cold in your replies, I don't appreciate it.

I just reread what you wrote. When I read it the first time I took it the wrong way, like you were attacking me.
But when I read it over again, I realised that there was kindness in your words. So I appologize for jumping at your with my last reply.
We're going through a very hard time at home right now and everything is so stressfull, so I am just extra sensitive here.
My Father has a heart condition. I've been told that only 1/2 his heart is actually working. That is one of the reasons why I am so desperate to offer him help - whether he chooses to except the help or not is beyond my control and I am fully aware of that. I don't want to lose my Dad or my family.
My Mother has told my Dad that if he doesn't get help, that that's it. It scares me and I know I can't make him get help or make them stay together, but I can offer my support and I can show him that there are other options for him.
Again, I'm sorry and thank you for your reply.

I do know that the Salvation Army offers free rehabs in many communities - but their treatment will be religious in nature.

It's okay - thank-you.
I am aware of the Salvation Army rehab, I do believe they do the 12 steps aswell. Though they may not, so I will look into it.

Though they may not, so I will look into it.I do know of a group here in my area that is based on a more severe behavior modification model. The program is paid for by a recycling program, manned by the recovering people. Most of the people who go through their program do attend 12 step meetings, but I don't know if it is required. If you contact them directly, they may know of programs in your area. It's called "seadrunar". Do a search for it.
There are also programs based on antabuse, but with a bad heart, I don't know how advisable that is. You'd have to talk to a doctor about that.

Thank you so much. I went to their website and emailed them asking if they have programs in Ontario. *Figers crossed*
Rehab should be free.
What is antabuse??

What is antabuse??Antabuse is a drug used for aversion therapy. It does essentially nothing to the body without alcohol. If it is mixed with alcohol, the person becomes violently ill. I have heard of treatment centers that have a person drink all they want on the first day, then the next morning they get antabuse. They are then allowed to drink again. This is repeated until the urge to drink is outweighed by the urge to not get sick.
The sad truth is, there is no reliable long term treatment for alcoholism. Most alcoholics drink until they die. I don't say that to discourage you - just to keep perspective. You can do everything right and get nothing but peace of mind from it. Don't cheat yourself of that peace thinking you somehow failed.
