Hi, I trapped my finger in a car door about a month ago. I went to the hospital and found that it had also broke the tip of the bone. The nurse drilled a hole in the nail to release the pressure as most of behind my nail was bleeding.

Now my nail is completely black and I've been expecting it to fall off for ages. My nail is quite loose (like a wobbly tooth) but is stilled joined to my nail bed at one side (maybe a sixth of the nail). Will the nail still fall off or will i have to wait till it grows off? I keep catching it on everything which leaves me in agony. Any reply would be great ;) ty, VC

I had this happen to my thumb in junior high, many years ago. Went through the same thing you are describing. I remember mine eventually falling off in pieces. The new nail underneath pushed the old nail off. In the meantime, you may want to put something around it to avoid tearing the nail; like a finger guard.

You can also go to your dermatologist and have them cut away the lifted portion of the nail plate. I would advise this procedure over just leaving it as it is because it is too easy for bacteria to get under the lifted portion and possibly turn into a full-blown infection. It will be easier to keep clean if the lifted portion is removed and it will also remove any chances of tearing the nail into the firmly attached portion.
