I am a woman of 42 years old. I weight 167lbs and am 5 feet 4 inches.
I saw my doctor last week and my cholesterol numbers are "horrible" at 308 in her own words. I know, I have to loose weight.
I've been exercising somewhat regularly with 3 or 4 40min to 60 min walks a week and the elliptical machine.
I am pretty scared, so I started exercising more and cut all the fat from my diet that I can think. I never ate much fruits or veggies and now eating 5 to 9 servings per day as well as oatmeal for breakfast. I switched to skim milk...you know all the good stuff, including fish.
The doctor asked me to change my diet and exercise to come back in 2 months and retest. If numbers don't go down, then medication.
I went to a natural food store and got good vitamins, green tea and an herbal supplement called Cholesterol MD.
Anyone heard of this supplement before??

Going to see a naturopath, would that help?

Hey boubou...I just had my #'s checked and mine is mid 200's. I'm not overweight and do eat healthy, but could do better at times. Check your family history and see if high cholesterol runs in the family. It does in mine and I am making more changes...I'm already eating egg whites, fruits, trying to eat more veges, no soda except for Sprite Zero which I mix with Raspberry Vodka at times, low fat cottage cheese mixed with fruit and in the past I've been eating the following, but now plan on cutting out bread, lunch meats, cheese, pasta and other carbs but not cutting out carbs all together. I'm even going as far as to cut out beer, even light beer, Martini's and Margarita's. But if that doesn't help, I have a feeling meds are in the picture and I'm only 37, 5' 5", 132 this morning, but sometimes 128 (it varies that much daily), athletic average female and do not have kids yet. Don't get discouraged! I'm not, yet, but you can only do so much! I refuse to kill myself in the gym...I'm already there at least 3 days a week doing 30 to 45 min cardio and resistance training when I'm out of town (I travel for work). Of course when I'm not traveling, it's easier to get in the gym more. Very frustrating!! Good luck at your next testing!!

Thanks for the tips Melissa!
I hear you loud and clear, and I am doing the best I can now.
Wonder what the naturopath will have to say about cholesterol MD supplement.

My Total-C was 328 18 months ago. It's at 195 now. All owed to niacin.

BTW... losing weight and exercizing is great and I encourage you to continue... but thinking that will lower your cholesterol may give you gfalse hopes.

Cutting out foods with cholesterol did not hep one bit. In fact, it got worse. I did not eat any animal product or meat or cheeze for about a year... not animal fat or eggs what-so-ever... and my cholesterol shot through the roof.

Suggest you ask you doctor about prescription Niaspan (it just extended release niacin... vitamin B-3)... this is the only med that has allowed me to get my cholesterol in the normal range during the last 16 years... way better then statins.

Not everyone can tollerate the flushing... but if this doesn't bother you... then you are all set. :)

boubou,

Cholesterol MD is a phytosterol. It can help with cholesterol like Benecol margrerine does.
It can't hurt you but it won't give you a large reduction.
