Hope you're all doing well. My story: For the past 7 years I keep getting cysts in my left breast. They drain them and they come back. This time they saw a solid inside one of them so they sent me for a biopsy. It came back as atypical cells but not cancer. So now the breast surgeon would like to remove the area with the atypical cells. He said that maybe in the next 8-10 yrs it may grow into a tumor (non malignant or not). My question is...Do you think this is jumping the gun a bit? Is this something that is necessary as a preventative. Has anyone else had this experience?

Thank you all.

Hi Lizzie, I found a very small lump, had needle core biopsy, results...atypical cells(POSSIBLE DCIS..only 5%) Saw surgeon, he suggested removing it, which I wanted done anyway. Surgery went well. During consultation, before surgery, Dr. said 95% that it was nothing. I go in Thursday to find out results. Very positive feeling it'll be ok. Even IF it is DCIS. it's non-invasive and not life threatening. That's what DCIS is ( insitu, which means inplace..stage 0...or some Drs. call it pre-cancerous). I am so glad I had the nodule removed. Atypical cells have the possibility to turn cancerous, so If I were you, I'd play if safe and opt for the surgery. If you feel better getting a 2nd opinion, then you should. Good luck, and let me know how everything turns out. I really care. ;)

Hi Lynn,
Thanks for your response. I'm going in today for an ultra sound to see if there's anything in there (what's left of the cyst sack, I guess) so i guess we'll take it from there. i'll probably have it removed since it's probably just going to keep filling up again and I'll keep having to go for needle aspirations. I think the best bet is just to get it out of there like you said. I'll keep you posted.

Well i just had my ultrasound. My cluster of cysts filled up again after having them drained just 5 days ago. Geez that was quick. So now it looks like I'm going to have them sugically removed since they tested atypical. Oh joy!
