Ok I know I've posted about getting my pap results back as abnormal, but I remember when my doctor was talking to me over the phone, she mentioned something about hpv. Can a diagnosis like this be made from getting back abnormal results? Also...I have gotten 2 out of 3 gardisil shots so not sure if this would skew the results. There's really no reason why I should be positive for hpv...

so can a doctor know this right away or was she just not choosing her words carefully when speaking with me?

Thanks!

Well, what did she mention? If my doctor gets back an abnormal pap, she runs it back thru for HPV. Perhaps that's what she was telling you?

Hello,

I can tell you that my research indicates that most Drs do what is called reflex testing for HPV when the PAP result is ASCUS-US. (abnormal squamus of unknown origin). The test is not type-specific for all HPV, only high risk types (16, 18, etc) which usually are responsible for most dysplasia. Low risk types usually only cause warts (type 16 can cause both). If your PAP result was LSIL, or HSIL it would not have had reflex testing because the vast majority of these results are indicative of the presence of high risk HPV.
If you are or ever have been sexually active, you have a 70% or greater of harboring HPV. Many times a PAP result will show ASCUS or LSIL if you have recently developed an HPV infection but your immune response has yet to kick in and squash it. Whatever you do, DON"T PANICK. HPV is extremely common in most all sexually active adults. Be glad the PAP test found a potential problem so you can be treated. PAP tests miss approximately 1 in 10 problematic cases. Your lucky--stay on top of it.
