My nail fell off around June. Now it looks like half the nail bed is a thick from the cuticle (but appears to look like a nail I suppose) , and theres a "bubble" of hard, deformed nail. Is this normal?

I had to have my big toenail removed in June. When I went back for a check-up about a month later I was told the new nail would grow in with like a "wave" to it. The nail is SLOWLY growing in and I also have a thick bubble type thing. I'm assuming this is the "wave" my dr. was talking about. I guess once it grows out far enough this part will be able to be clipped off. Anyway, from reading your post, it sounds like exactly what I'm experiencing. Hope this helps!

Whenever the nail plate is removed, either by tearing it off due to trauma, or having to have it removed by your doctor, the nail bed goes through trauma as well. It will 'push up' and the surface will slightly harden in an effort to protect the delicate underlying skin, blood vessels and nerve endings. As the new nail plate cells are formed in the matrix and push forward, they will push the damaged portion of nail plate off the free edge. This can take anywhere from 6-10 months depending on your genetics for nail growth. Toe Nails grow much slower than finger nails, so be patient.
