From what I've seen, you are really playing with fire when you mix these drugs. You could end up with a drug -induced psychosis that can be permanent. Our son experienced a fair amount of psychosis when he smoked pot and very occasionally used other rec drugs while on lithium. The problem is that there is no way of predicting the outcome. Some people can do it for months and be ok; others do it once and end up in the psych ward. It is a crap shoot but the results are usually never good.

Dear Faint423,
My ex un-med bipolar, was on pcp and went off deep end, had a break down, and went to jail for things he didnt even remember doing. I am Mslainie and not bipolar but my ex, son, best girlfriend and recently passed boyfriend are bipolar. I did for a year alot of research about bipolar and different chemical imbalances. so any rec drug that messes with the balance of the brain on or off a medicine- reacts different in every person, just like we all have our own finger prints. Personally I saw too many friends, especially one go off and never come back and we were 16, I am now as she 42. Like Tsohl said its a roll off the dice if you decide to take it.
Take Care and Good Luck...

Playing with "prescribed drugs" and "street drugs" as a mix is just asking for trouble--seriously, why would you chance that? Pdocs don't even want you to drink alcohol with your psych drugs....you only have the one brain. Just don't experiment and then drive somewhere. I almost lost my brother because some guy thought it would be fun to do what you're talking about & then go for a joyride. I don't have warm fuzzy feelings towards this guy, trust me, and it's been 25 years.

Recreational drugs do enough damage on their own. I did my fair share of drugs when I was a teenager and in my early 20's. I have a lot of memory problems now. My pdoc says the drugs are most likely to blame. I would strongly suggest staying FAR away from any drugs you are not prescribed to take. Not only are they illegal, they can cause serious long term damage in addition to a possible cardiac arrest or stroke.

Thefaint,
Well, if you're BP, or suffer from any mental ill health and you're looking to do rec drugs then you've got to be absolutely potty in my eyes.

To answer your question - YES. Both the rec drugs you mention and mood stabilsers work on neuronal synapses - so yes, they will specifically counteract each other as they compete for their own space in the receptors in your brain.

You have been put on the mood stabilsers for a reason - because you have a labile mood - why on earth do you want to risk messing about with your mood again with these powerful psychotropic rec drugs????????? I'm completely bewildered......

If you want to do all these drugs again, then I'd recommend stopping seeing your psych, dropping the meds and just going back to your old life - instability. That's all you'll get out of it - and it ain't a pretty picture. Don't try to fool your psych, nor waste their time when they could be dealing with someone else who wants to be stable and won't do silly things to forfit what both psych and patient have worked towards.

It's like saying to a recovering 'complete' alcoholic whose trying to get clean, 'Hey here's a bottle of methylated spirits, not officially alcohol on the label but exactly the same chemical structure with the same outcome - fancy some?'..... I mean are you mad?????

I'm absolutely bewildered...

Well said, NUT;) Even though we are unsure whether the original poster is contemplating doing what he discusses or why he posted the question to begin with, anyone who is being treated with perscribed medication should NEVER contemplate mixing it with illegal drugs or alcohol especially, as you well point out, if they are being treated for Bipolar or any disorder of the brain or chemical imbalance. I must agree how it is a BIG waste of everybody's time if somebody is going to use illegal drugs when trying to treat something that requires perscribed medications.

Just my two cents worth added to yours.;) ~ Goody:angel:
