I'm actually unsure whether i have varicose veins, but ive always had really really visible veins on my calves..i dont think it's varicose veins, though! However, I have recently developed spider veins on my thighs and I'm only 19! Is this normal?? I'm going to see a doctor about something else on tuesday and dont know whether it's worth asking him about it or if it's more of a cosmetic issue. I've always had nice legs (not very modest about that, I know), so now i'm worried about these spider veins!! The skin on my thighs is also quite red around the area..:(

Spider veins are hereditary. Have you asked your parents about it? A tan helps them to look faded, but they don't go away. They just get a little worse as time goes on. There are some things you can do to slow the progression of them though (wearing pantyhose, certain herbs to bathe in). I would definitely ask the doctor about them. They can educate you about how they develop, what makes them worse or better etc. Don't feel vain (no pun intended). Your doctor should be able to help you with all of your general health issues. And this is a vascular system thing (I think that's the right system). You definitely should get as much info as you can.

I was that age when I started getting them as well.. genetics can play a part, sometimes birth control can also cause them. It doesn't hurt to ask the doctor. There's nothing that can be done to absolutely prevent them. There are some cosmetic procedures to get rid of them but they cost $$$ (although I'm thinking about getting some of mine taken care of later this year.. I've gained many more in the last 10 years!)
