View Full Version : First appointment with REAL doctor, what can I expect?

Well, I'm finally going to a doctor who specializes in FMS. He doesn't take my insurance, but it has been nearly impossible to find a doctor aroun dhere who knows much about FMS. I was diagnosed by a Family Care Physician, but he didn't have much to tell me about how to care for myself or help in any way. Now I am finally going to a "real" doctor and I was wondering, what should I expect from this visit? Is there anything I should be prepared to ask or tell him? I appreciate any info you can give. Thanks!

It would be a good idea to take all of your recent bloodwork and test results with you. One so you don't have to go through them twice and two he will want to see them. You may want to write your questions down before you go because once you get in there and do all the paperwork etc. you may get distracted. Let us know how you make out and good luck to you

I went to the doctor today because of the pain and swelling in my left wrist. It just keeps getting worse. I think that my family phys. is tired of seeing me for my FM and there are no doctors in my area that deal specifically with FM. His thoughts on FM is that it is basically severe tendonitis and that is how he treats it. His treatment this time was to send me for an x-ray and when I go in for my follow visit with the orthopaedic surgeon for my knee surgery I had 6 weeks ago I am to set up an appt. for the surgeon to look at my wrist. This whole thing is a joke. I don't need a surgeon for my FM, I need a new doctor.

When I first went to my Migrain specalist, I drove over an hour. Is there a doctor that can help you with in a radius you can handle? Sorry you are going through so much. If the surgeon did your knee he must have found something, Yes? If not definatly get new ones. Good hunting and good luck, Kim

The reason I had knee surgery was because my leg alignment was wrong, a genetic thing, not FM related. But the condition didn't help my FM because my knee cap was out of alignment and rubbing on the bones of my knee joint, and also they cut my tibia and moved it over and screwed it down to help realign my tendons that were all to the left of where they were suppose to be. My right leg is the same way, but they won't do anything to it unless I start to have problems with pain and swelling like my left leg was before surgery. As far as finding a good doctor, there are no one that specializes in FM in my area, and even if there were, my HMO probably wouldn't cover it. I am not sure what to believe about my wrist problem. All I know is most days I can't use my left hand even to get dressed with because it hurts too much. I hope I get some idea from the surgeon about my wrist. He did do a great job with my leg as far as I can tell, at this point it is much better. It will be hard to tell until I get the brace off.

Sounds good, about your surgeon. I hated our HMO, we went traditioal almost 4 yrs ago. Can you? It does cost more but, we can go where we want and almost all tests are covered. Although, the cpap machine was not covered over 80% rented while, my friends hmo paid for it. We went through so many years of garbadge w/hmo, before we were able to switch, it's worth every penny. Good luck, Kim
