Hi Hopes , I am taking a beta blocker for HBP and fast heart rate . Was taking 50mg of tropolxl but was raised too 100mg because my bp was way too high , now I know beta blockers are supposed to lower your heart rate , but mine is still high . Went in for bp check yesterday and it was 103 . The nurse didn't seem concerned and said hers was higher than mine . I hate the feeling of my heart racing , it pounds so hard I can see it thru my shirt . I also suffer from anxiety and take xanex on a as needed basis . Don't know if my heart is racing from anxiety or if anxiety is making my heart race ! Would just like to know what to do when are heart is racing how can we lower it ? Thanks , Ammy

I am on toprol xl 2 times a day 50mg for both HBP and fast heart rate. It seems to work pretty well most of the time..sometimes if i eat to much my heart rate is high still but not anymore since I don't overeat anymore at all.

Hopes,

I take 10 mg of propranolol 3x a day for palpitations. I know beta-blockers are also supposed to be good for helping with a fast rate. My heart sometimes would sometimes race to 150-200 bpm for no reason and the beta-blocker really helps with controlling that. I have anxiety issues so I take zoloft and klonopin for that, low bp so I take sodium bicarbonate, and I just found out today that I have a hiatal hernia so now I am on protonix! Happiness through chemicals!

MAYBE SOME NERVE MEDS MIGHT HELP.But i dont know.I keep getting a feeling maybe my throat this getting tight.maybe thats not the right meds for you,Or maybe you need a holitor monitor again to see whats going on while your on the meds.

My heart doesn't race more after taking the meds Hope. Lately my heart rate is slower then ever so i am wondering if I should reduce the amount of BP meds I am on. In the hospital my heart rate was between 54-65 the whole time I was there and my BP was like 100 or less over 65 or so. In my doctors office the other day my pressure was 113/68. I am dealing with all of this really badly unfortunately. My anxiety is through the roof. I am making myself worse because of my mind. And yes sometimes especially when lying down I do feel a big restriction on my breathing. Dunno if its the meds or just my body betraying me even further.

Lutheran, :)

The beta blockers make your heart slow down. As a result, less blood is pumped through and the supply of oxygen to organs and tissues diminishes.
With lower availability of oxygen, one experiences shortness of breath. Its severity is often dose dependent, at least for me it was. I was on a high dose and my breathing difficulties so severe, I had to stop taking the medication altogether. Mention your concerns to your doctor - perhaps a dosage adjustment is called for. Anxiety does not help but is understandable.

Flowergirl you are pretty educated on these issues , and it all makes sense too if you think about it...less harder pumping equals less blood which carries the oxygen around...sound reasoning. I do believe my dose is too high so I will mention this tomorrow to my cardiologist and see what he says. Thanks a lot.

This is true only if you are on too high of dose of beta blockers. In people with tachycardia, often if the heart is racing your heart beats less efficiantly. So a beta blocker slows down the heart which makes each beat MORE effective. In tachycardia, the heart does not have a chance to fill completely making it more difficult to get blood to the furthest points in the body. If you are on too high a dose of beta blockers, then this happens as well, your heart will not have the blood pressure (or enough squeeze) to get blood to the furthest points.

You have to be careful with beta blockers and any kind of lung problem, especially asthma. Some beta blockers have more effect on the lungs than others do. So if you are experiencing breathing troubles with any beta blocker, you need to try something else. But be sure that you arent experiencing anxiety that is causing the same problem. It is very difficult to treat heart rate problems if you have anxiety because anxiety just feeds into heart problems.

Hopespring, I take toprol xl for my tachycardia. I also take flecainide, which is an antiarrhythmic. I have an atrial tachycardia because I have two pace maker sites essentially (PAIN IN THE BUTT). I have struggled with beta blockers because they lower your blood pressure which makes me so tired and sluggish. After time I have gotten used to it some as my body adjusted to it.

Just a little tid bit for you all, beta blockers mess with your melatonin levels which is why people often experience difficulty sleeping. Knowing that, some people can eliviate that problem by taking some melatonin at night. Every drug effects everyone a little differently, but if you are having trouble sleeping, might be something to discuss with your doctor. You can get over the counter melatonin.

Just some food for thought. Good luck everyone with their tachycardia, I been there, do that, and HATE IT WITH YA!!

Doesn't your pacemaker control the speed of your heart rate? Or am I misreading your post.

Oh I think u meant you have 2 spots in your heart that control your heart rate..
