Hello, I'm a 22 year old male with some worries on his mind. I am a slim build and have never really had any problems with my heart. A year ago I started working out (lifting weights) and I work outside so I get enough physical activity. Less than a year ago I got a dull pain, which was sometimes slightly sharp, in the left of my chest. Near my heart, around my heart, sometimes extending slightly to my shoulder, and varying places. It would come and go and finally I decided to get it checked out.

My blood pressure was fine, I got an ECG done and it came out fine and the Dr. wasn't worried in the slightest due to my age and physical condition. Sure enough it went away, returned once in a while, sometimes I would even do my workout when I felt this way and it didn't worsen. I was drinking protein shakes or stuff like it and stopped drinking those because they were disgusting and they really weren't making a difference. Other than that my diet isn't the best but like I said I am almost 6'1 and weigh 165 lbs.

At the beginning of April I started my summer job, working outside as maintenance at a concert venue. My allergies can get bad (sneezing a whole lot during the day, itchy eyes, itchy throat, cough, etc.) and I have my good days and my bad days with symptoms. One day we used powerwashers to clean, which kicks up particles of dirt I'm assuming and I would wake up late that night with trouble breathing and wheezing. During exercise I would get out of breath slightly quicker than when I was younger but nothing alarming and after a few minutes of rest I was back to normal.

Now back to the chest pain. Sometimes I would get my pain again but it felt more like I did it during workout and needed rest. Well Friday I was fine and then I got the irritation and didn't feel right. My heart rate was a little accelerated and I felt a little weak. I didn't work out at all since and went to the doctor's on Monday. Come Monday I felt fine but it slowly started to act up. Blood pressure: great. I told him where it hurt and he said if it was a heart problem I'd have dull pain from shoulder to shoulder, jaw, hands, sweating, nausea, etc. He pointed to places and asked if it hurt but I explained it wasn't any part of my skin or muscle that was tender to the touch. He was confident yet again, and gave me a prescription for an inhaler for when I have breathing problems, as for the chest pains said it could be muscle and that I could go back to exercising.

Come today, my left side still feels a little weaker and it seems I don't have to do much to get my heart going faster. I want to work out but I am afraid, but is it just stress or anxiety causing this? Is it reflux mistaken for heart trouble? Someone help please.

I would order a echo and some blood tests, I'd rather be safe then just GUESS at what is wrong.

but is it just stress or anxiety causing this? Maybe it happens to people, If your asking this question there is a better chance

Is it reflux mistaken for heart trouble? sometimes, i can easly tell the difference. take some tums when you feel this pain, if it gets better it's reflux.

Dude,

Will RUNNING for about 5 minutes bring on the pain and then after a short rest (another 5 minutes) it goes away? That would indicate stable angina. If the answer is yes, then a stress test is in order.

My best guess though is that it has something to do with your lungs and inhaling irritating particles. Does your dictor hear anything irregulare with his stethescope?

If your doctor thinks it might be reflux you can test it out by buying some PRILOSEC and taking it daily.

Running doesn't necessarily bring it on. It is more of a dull pain than sharp but it can be sharp here and there. It feels kind of like my left side is weaker than it was. Today I worked outside and it was really hot and humid and I did some lifting and such throughout the day and I didn't feel any better or worse. I took two puffs of my new inhaler early in the morning. I still don't feel like I should be working out, but now I don't know if my mind is playing a part in this.

My doctor didn't exactly say what he thought it was but he was very sure it was not my heart and he didn't say anything was wrong after he took my blood pressure or used the stethoscope.

I know your frustration of having a problem, and getiing the "you're too young to have that problem" answer. First and foremost my advice is, if you feel you have not been given a good enough answer to what the problem is, ask around and keep going to different doctors. Ask for a stress test and an ecg,( I know you already had ecg). Find a doctor that can tell you, it's not your heart, but it IS this. I know from experience that not knowing for sure can create new problems, and it's amazing what anxiety and stress can do to your heart, chest, whatever. I have a heart problem and went to the DR & ER several times, they would tell me it was anxiety, overtired, da,da,da. One day my heart was beating really fast and I called the Dr and said I need to get in asap, I feel sick and my heart isn't right. I talked myself into being emberassed to go to the hospital incase they didn't find anything, again! So when I get to the dr, they check me & my heart rate is 280, and I'm having a severe episode of tachycardia. Asked me why I didn't go to the hospital right away, it was very serious. The worse part was, I was actually happy inside that I finally was having something bad enough that they took me seriously. How freakin messed up is that??
So, after all that, I am fine, but I really urge you to continue to get it checked out until someone gives you a definitive answer for what the problem is. If there is something wrong, then you can get it treated. If you only have a stressed muscle in your chest, maybe from coughing or lifting weights, then thats good too. Just find out. I actually told my current Dr, "Just check me out very thoroughly, cuz if I wake up dead tomorrow, I'm gonna be really pissed!!""

Best of luck to you...hope you get an answer soon.feel free to email me if you think I might be able to help you...even for a pep talk :j x adkins

Thanks diamond girl, I'll keep what you said in mind. Since my post my left arm gained some strength back and I've been able to go back to lifing weights and exercise but I feel like exercise aggravates it...this still doesn't mean it's not heart related. I was beginning to think a pinched nerve maybe or a mixture of pinched nerve and stressed chest muscle because there is a slight tingling in my left pinky and ring finger, like if you are supporting yourself with your elbow in bed and a slight tingling reaches your hand, like that.
