I have been on treatment for LPR for a week and have not noticed any improvement ( I know I have to give it some time!). I have been reading that many here are not getting relief from meds. What happens next? My dr. mentioned that if the prescribed treatment doesn't work he may have to treat me another way. I didn't ask what that may be because I assumed the meds would work. I have to admit that it kind of freaks me out to read that sometimes it seems nothing works! I am afraid I'll have to get used to this!
Any thoughts?

Well not every PPI works well for everyone. You have to try them all out. But you also have to change your lifestyle, eating habits etc.. Im really not sure because im trying to get through this too. You have to trust your doctor and follow his guidance. Good luck!

I am at the same point, only I've been on Nexium for 6 weeks without any relieft for my LPR. From what I understand, it could take 6 months to work! I keep wondering how that can be. In the meantime, I think we could be undergoing some tests to CONFIRM LPR and see if there are any possible causes.
I just had an Uppere GI this morning but they found nothing.

Have you changed your diet at all. The first thing I was told was to stay away from chocolate, alcohol and anything mint as these all make the LES valve floppy allowing the acid to back up. After that I stopped eating red meat, tomato sauce and citrus and all this has helped some. Some people will never be cured. Surgery is a last resort but not an option in my case due to other health problems and age. Try not only the PPI's, each one but also Tagamet and Pepcid. sometimes they just work better than the PPI's. I take a 2 Pepcid before bed and it helps.

Hi,
I took Prevacid for 8 days, for what my doctor thought was 'gastritis'! I kept getting worse. My symptoms began with a full day of diarrhea, followed by acute upper/mid abdominal distress. I mean it hurt badly!! This went on for 3 to 4 weeks. Symptoms of gastritis from all I've read. I decided to go off the medication and go back on what I'd taken years ago for similar discomfort---Zantac and Mylanta. Well, I didn't get better quickly, but after about 2 weeks now, I'm so much better. I watched what I ate--not hardly any fat, no fried foods, etc. Now I'm introducing more and more to my diet again. I had an abdominal CT scan, and blood work to check out my pancreas--all normal. This week I had an endoscopy, and there was no sign of reflux problems, gastritis or inflammation of any kind! I think I had a bad 'bug' back 5 weeks ago and took meds that I didn't need (not the doctor's fault--as he was going on my symptoms), and I got worse. If this pain comes back, I'll have to have more tests but not sure where they'd go. Does anyone have a clue? I had my GB out 7 years ago. I know you can have problems even afterward but this has been 7 years! I do hope I'm 'home free'. We'll see. yanksgirl

Well, you could have had an Irritable bowel Sydrome attack or it could have just been a bug. I really find that taking Acidopholous or a Probiotic of some kind really helps keep everything perking along. Everyone seem to have their favorite. They all seem to get my stomach back in balance. Protonix was bad for me like Prevacid was for you but Prevacid was fine. Go figure. It sounds to me that your stomach just got out of balance and then corrected itself with diet and time.

I have to agree on the IBS thing. My colon seems to work overtime. Everytime I go to the bathroom (to urinate, I mean), I have a bm--not alot, usually but just a 'bit'. Alot of the time I feel 'pressure' there and like I need to go and sure enough, I eliminate a bit when I go try. I do have hemorrhoids (internal) and they come out when I go so much. I use gel and when they are out alot, I use a suppository. They get better but occasionally bleed
slightly. It gets aggravating though, going so much. I've started eating Activia
yogurt. Do you know if it helps--I wondered if that's why I'm going so much the last few days. I bought a bottle of probiotic capsules but haven't taken but one---a few days ago. So you find these help with digestion and IBS? The doctor on Oprah recommended them. I thought I'd try it but have postponed doing it regularly due to the other problems I had. Would you recommend trying it for a time? thanks

In my experience of ibs its very much down to your diet finding the foods that aggrivate the bowel. All the medicines in the world will not help if the foods you are eating do not agree with you. It took me three years to find this out.

I have found the Acidophalous helped me and there is a product called Digestive Advantage IBS that some people swear by. I used it also but then just switched to acidophalous. As far as food for me there are certain foods that will bother me but there are times when I can eat something like pizza or onion rings and have no problem and then another time I do so it is hard to know. Hard to give up all the good stuff. I feel mine was more an imbalance than regular IBS. I never had IBS-D, always IBS-C. I don't use the Activia because it is milk based and milk products do bother me not so much because of the lactose but also the enzymes in milk. It does work for many though. I will say the Prune flavor is really good.

Where can you get digestive advantage and is it an over the counter med or a vitamin type pill? What is Acidophalus? Is that the Probiotic I already have?
I tell you, yesterday I had a bad bout with 'going' everytime I went to the bathroom, which is often for me (weak bladder). Pretty soon my internal hemorrhoids were out and the pressure was not good so I used the hemorrhoid gel and at bedtime, the suppository. This morning the pressure is still there but not bad and so far, only one trip to the bathroom for a b.m.
It may well have been what we ate--barbecue the night before, and last night, avocado on a salad and split pea soup!! I took a Gas-X strip, and that was all. I'm starting a 'log' of what I eat, when, and what happens with the bowels, to see if there's a pattern or connection to foods that cause it.
Thanks for the help. yanksgirl

Hello,
It's my understanding that acid reflux is greatly related to foods that don't agree with us. One of my sisters suffers from it nad these are a few tips I gave her.
Always try to lay down on your left side. When you lay down on your right side the backflow of stomach acid into your esophogus increases. If that doesn't help, stay on your feet and go for a short walk. The body's movement, and remaining upward can sometimes help.
My grandpa used to eat a slice of raw potato and drink one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar stirred into one cup of warm water. He sweetened his with honey, but if you're diabetic or allergic to anything related to bees, I'd just grin and bear the taste of the apple cider vinegar - ha !
Peppermint tea throughout day might also help, and before your meal, if you can take two or three tumeric capsules before eating, that might help prevent your reflux. Tumeric is known to stimulate the the flow of saliva, which helps to neutralize acid and push digestive juices back down to where they should be - your stomach.
Good Luck to you !
