I don't know how I missed your response to me way back in February about my son passing blood after a bm but I did. Thanks for taking to the time to reply.
I was wondering if you could tell me a little more about your sons surprise liver failure? I am finally taking my son to a GI on next Friday so we'll see what he has to say. sam

i am sooo sorry i wasn't able to get to this board for a couple of weeks, had other ones with big issues i needed to adress.so,i am thinking you already have seen this doc?how did it go and what does the GI doc think?have they ordered any tests at all to see up inside that area?like i mentioned before, because of the bright red color of the blood, this bleed has to be taking place somewhere from just beyond his stomach/upper digestive tract on down.it is definitely not digested blood but fresh.i certainly hope they can find the cause soon without any really major testing to have to go thru.have they been keeping an eye on his labs?his hemoglobin would be the bigger teller here.the younger the child, the more that even smaller amounts of blood loss could really matter overall, they just need to stay on top of it espescially right after a bleed.did you say he was actually also peeing blood too or did it just appear to be that way?
my sons 'suprise" liver failure was caused by a congenital issue that stemmed from having the PKD gene, which he also has.both my sister and i had to be tested since this was a congenital autosomal dominant type of kidney disease, and we both tested positive for the globby type cysts upon having ultrasound done on our kidneys and also includes the liver too.my son was actually born kind of going into liver failure,we just really had no clue at all til he suddenly vomited blood one morning(abut a month and a half into the 7th grade) after i sent him off to school that day.he had been complaining off and on about tummy aches but these also seemd to coincide with when he had to do something that he didn;t want to do.he also despite actually being down to having only 20% of his actual liver function left at that time, never ever had a touch of jaundice until wayyy after his dx.unbelievable really but we really had no clue this was going on and neither did the stupid PA who had done his sports physical only less than two month earlier, she checked off the okay to play football box and claimed he was perfectly healthy.can you believe that crap?this was despite what his GI doc told us later that his liver and spleen would have HAD TO of been extremely huge at that time, this idiot PA totally missed it while actually palpating his abdomen.honestly.we never noticed it since he always wore big baggy t shirts.the whole thing was really incredible to go thru.he finally got that gift of life on june 7 2000 and has been doing great with the new liver ever since,it was all truely miraculous.you just do not actually have a freaking clue as to what is actually going on in anyones body til you take a good hard look in there.hopefully what your son has is something very minor that can be easily taken care of.PLEASE let me know what you found out at that appt with the GI doc,K? and again,i am really sorry i wasn't able to respond sooner than this.just let me know,Marcia

Thanks for responding. We actually just got back from the appointment with the Ped GI a little while ago. I had to reschedule my original one. He wants to do a colonoscopy. My husband is NOT going to like that news. I haven't even told him yet. This doc thinks it's polyps. He said it's the most common reason at this age (he turned 5 in july). He also said that once you go in and get rid of them they don't come back. The only way to KNOW FOR SURE if that is what is going on is to get the colonoscopy. I haven't made that appt yet. I'm waiting to talk to his dad later.
He didn't have blood in his pee...he just thought he did because the drops of blood that hit the water after his bm turned it pink.
Sounds horrible what you went through with your son. I have 3 of them and can't even think about a life threatening illness. I'm known as an emotional whimp in our family. I have zero control over my emotions when things are scary.
I've been giving him the miralax since the last incident of blood...I thought the doctor might be right and maybe his poop was too hard & it was hurting him internally so until I saw this GI doc I decided it couldn't hurt to give it to him. This doctor wants me to keep giving it to him until the next appt.
I'll let you know when we set that appt. thanks for responding. Sam

that really does sound like the most logical possibility for his symptoms.unless his particular 'type' of polyps are somehow different than the 'normal' ones that you can get as you age, they can come back.the standard(i am going by my hubbys experience with polyps here)is to have the colonoscopy done all the way up and to remove any polyps that are found.then in a year or two you come back for another scan.if nothing shows then,i know with my hubby now,he was told he did not have to come back for five years since his last one was completely clear.i really DO thik the oscopy is really the best way to tackle this.the really nice thing about it is if they see anything while in there, they can remove it on the spot, there is no having to come back at a later date type stuff to deal with.your son will be pretty sedated during this so he really wont feel any pain with it.it really is his best bet right now to find out whats up in there.your hubby will just have to deal with it.believe me,when it is for our kids, you can do things you never imagined having to do just becasue you have to ya know?you will be fine too.you don't have a clue as to just how much inner strength you have til it gets tested in some way.i was amazed at mine.i did not think i could have ever actually gone thru what we had to and survive with my head still intact, but you do what you have to for your child, and you become much stronger for the experience.trust me on that one.i wish you all lots of luck here and hope things will be all over and done with after the oscopy.this really IS the best way to go with this, really.please keep me posted,K? hang in there mom.marcia

Thank you for your kind words...I really do KNOW he needs this done. I don't know why the doctor told me they wouldn't come back. It didn't sound right to me either. Right now I'm waiting for the docs office to call me back to answer some questions then I will schedule. My husband thought maybe get a second opinion but I think they would recommend the same thing. I will let you know when I get it scheduled. Sam
