View Full Version : Should I be doing anything for this?

I had to have my big toenail removed back in June because it somehow became detatched. Anyway, I know toenails can take a very long time to grow back, but in the meantime is there anything I should be doing for the toe? The last time I was back to the podiatrist for a check he said the new nail had started to grow in. He also said it would have a wave to it while growing back. I can definitely see something growing in that is absolutely hideous! There is a lot of yucky, crusty stuff all over where the toenail should be. I guess I'm wondering if I should be soaking it or anything to make it look better. Being that it is so ugly, I want to keep it covered at least while I'm out in public! I've also read that I shouldn't use a bandaid as that will hold in the moisture and could cause infection. So does anyone have any suggestions for me? Thanks!

You are right not covering it with a bandaid. What is growing back in right now are the cells that were damaged from the trauma. New, healthy cells will emerge and will push this damaged portion off the free edge. No, it won't look very well until the damaged portion has completely grown off. You might want to apply a good wuality nail and cuticle oil to the nail twice a day. Try Botanical Oil which is available in the nail department of Sally Beauty Supply. It will help to condition and moisturize the nail plate cells as well as improve the exposed skin of the nail bed.
