my son will be 2 next month, he is now in a booster seat, the one WITH the back, it only straps in with the car seatbelt, every once in a while he will reach over and unbuckle it, thank god yesterday it caught my eye and told my hubby to pull over goin down the highway, i smack his hand and tell him that its bad, and he could get a boo boo, is there any kind of cover that anyone has heard of that covers the buckle part?

I have seen them here, in baby shops, little velcro-attached furry things. Sera

I usually turn the thing that the belt goes into backwards, that always works cause then they can't reach the button to open it.

He is way too young for that kind of seat, even with the back. he is too young to sit in it properly as you have already found out. Boosters are not as safe as 5 point harness seats. It is best to keep him in a 5 point harness for as long as possible.

we only have one car, and its a tiny 2 door one and he got too tall to fit in the backseat in a regular carseat thats why we bought it, it said 30 to 100 lbs and he meets the height requirements too

I have to agree with the last post. My oldest will be 4 next month and has just now graduated to the booster with the back. His cousin who was 4 in June is still in a car seat since she is a bit smaller. My 2 1/2 year old is still in a car seat and will be in one for at least another 1 1/2 to 2 years. It's not only about size, but control of their neck and so on if there was to be an accident.

Hi! Just a caution here-- a friend of mine had the same issue, so she got a booster for her 2 year old. She was pulled over for some traffic issue and the officer asked her how old her child was. When she found out he was 2 she took the seat, threatened the mom with JAIL, and charged her with failing to have a child in a proper restraint. She had to wait by the side of the road for a ride, and ended up having to pay a 300$ fine which is more than a good Britax seat and then she had to go buy a seat on top of it! Here in FL it is illegal to have a 2 year old in a booster seat even if they meet the height and weight requirement- they also have to meet the age requirement which I think is 4. Just something you may want to look into in your state, in addition to the safety issues others mentioned. Take care!

I would agree with you all but he meets all height, weight and age requirements, he knows how to buckle and unbuckle the 5 point also so its not much of a difference! it is almost impossible for him to fit in our car with the old seat.

My suggestion would be to get yourself a seat that your child cannot get out of. A 2 year old isn't always going to listen or even understand what the consequence of not wearing a seat belt is. My 4 year old understands that he is to NEVER take his belt off until Mommy or Daddy says it's alright. He tried it once and got an earful. My 2 year old wouldn't understand or even for that matter care. They have seat's out there that will fit your child height and weight requirement. If you were to get in an accident, I'm sure your first concern would be to have your children properly restrained. You can't drive and look behind you at the same time hoping your child is buckled in. My son was a giant for his age, but not mature enough to go in to a booster until 4. Now I know he won't take off his belt. My 2 year old would be doing laps around the back of the car if I put him in a booster!

I really think you need to re-check the age recommendation on the seat (and the law in your state). I have never seen a booster that starts at age 2, nor have I seen a state law that says it's ok to put a 2 year (and he's not even 2 yet) old in a booster . They start at age 3 minimum. I know you said that you can't fit two car seats in your car but you really need to try to work something else out. It can be a matter of life and death.

my mom's method of teaching all her grandkids about car safety was to find a bug, show the kids the bug, let the kids watch the bug crawl around on the ground for a minute, and then she stomped on the bug and squished it flat. she then proceeded to tell the kids that a car can do the same thing to them if they don't follow the rules and be safe (they were specifically discussing car and street rules). my three year old knows how to unbuckle her seatbelt (booster like your son's), but she won't unless i tell her to because she doesn't want to get "squished like a bug!"
i realize this method sounds barbaric, but think about who you are trying to teach.... what toddler do you know who doesn't fit your basic description of a barbarian (only shorter and so much cuter!!!)??? :)

I find it mildly disturbing that you're risking your child's life just because it inconveniences you to find a carseat that will fit in your vehicle or a vehicle that will fit your carseat. I understand tight budgets (believe you me, I do, being on medicaid and not being able to get more than part time, minimum wage work) but I really don't think you can afford the risk to your child and yourself. If you were ever pulled over, you could potentially lose not only your drivers liscense, but your child. In all fifty states, it's illegal to have a child younger than three in a booster seat. In most states, four is the absolute minimum. Not only is it illegal, but even a minor accident could be fatal due to your "inconvenience".
There are all manner of latch covers and secondary locks available for car seats, and more than one carseat that can hold up to the brag of being un-baby-beatable. Try a Britax Companion or Roundabout for a rear-facing seat with top of the line safety, or consider the Decathalon or Boulevard for convertible safety that can fit in even the tiniest car. I have a Chevy Cavalier, both front seats pushed back the entire way, and we've never had a problem with our Boulevard. They're expensive, yes, but.... very frankly, no price is too high to protect my son, even on my budget.
You can sit and make excuses all you want, but in the end, the fact is that your child is not safe in a booster seat. No amount of fussing or excuses will change that.

My sister had the same problem with her daughter. She finally had to get another seat with a harness that would grow with her. She found one that you unthread the harness out of and use it as a booster seat with the back. She didn't want to have to spend more money on another seat, but at least now she has the peace of mind that her daughter isn't unbuckeling herself and getting out of the seat while she's driving.
I know you would rather opt for just a cover but sometimes it is better to spend the extra to know your child is safe then go for convenience.
