I have heard that 2 teaspoons of honey and olive oil and a garlic pill a day are very good for your veins and for lowering cholesterol. Is this true?

I've heard claims like this for olive oil and garlic...bring on the Shrimp Scampi...but never for honey.

Hello Luther,
Sorry to hear about your high cholesterol. However, you're right there are some proven foods and other plants that you can incorporate into your diet that can help you out.
They have proven that foods high in magnesium, potassium, fiber, and Omega-3's, or monounsaturated fat are terrific at helping to reduce cholesterol.
Here are some things I've heard of:
Avocados are high in monosaturated fat, magnesium, iron and potassium. They're great in salads !
Kiwis are high in magnesium, potassium and fiber. Can't beat that !
Two large apples a day contain pectin and can drop cholesterol levels. Pectin can form a gel in your tummy that may keep fats in food from being completely absorbed.
One to two tablespoons of lecithin granules daily has been proven to lower LDL levels and raise HDL (good cholesterol) levels.
Check your chromium levels, because they are finding that a deficiency in chromium levels may be directly related tocoronary artery disease. So, 1 or 2 tablespoons of brewer's yeast or a hand full of raw sunflower seeds can help because they are high in chromium.
Two raw carrots a day can help reduce cholesterol levels.
Four cloves of fresh garlic a day can help reduce cholesterol levels. You can also take garlic supplements if the fresh garlic would upset your tummy.
Taking 1,000 mgs. of Vitiamin C every day is also know to reduce cholesterol levels.
You're right about the olive oil. It, and peanut oil, have been proven to contain monsaturated fats and are effective at helping to reduce cholesterol levels.
Honey, which you also mentioned ,is thought to strengthen the heart and body overall. It appears to have inherent chemicals which help the body repair itself.
Also, there's alway good old oatmeal or anything else containing oats that are recommended two to three times weekly for cholesterol reduction.
These are just a few things that I have knowledge of. I'm sure that there are many other foods which are high in the vitamins and minerals needed to help you combat your cholesterol levels.
As always, check with your doc before you make any radical dietary changes.
Good Luck to you, Luther, and bon apetite !
