I have a white spot just a tad up from my cuticle on one of my fingernails. I have other white spots on other nails but this one just seems a little lighter in color like a clearish white if that makes any since. I've never worried about the other white spots because I've had them off and on for a long time on different nails but I just can't tell if this is the same thing because it looks similar but a little different. I guess I am worried because I have a fungus on 3 toenails so I hope I have not spread it to my fingernail. I never use the same tools on my fingernails though. How likely is it that a fungus would start as a white spot near the cuticle area? I always thought it usually starts at the top of nails and works its way down to the cuticle. Am I right about this or could I be getting fungus in my fingernail? The best I can tell the rest of the nail looks good besides this white spot. Can anyone help?

If the white spot begins from under the cuticle and moves forward with the nail plate it is probably a Leuconychia. This is caused by voids in the nail plate production in the matrix. Some people have these all the time and some people get them only once in a while.
