Hello All

I am building up an immunity to Acemetaphine and currently taking anywhere from 2-3 g of it at a time to treat migraines. (Only once a day, maybe 3-4 times/week) My question is if I am doing any short term or long term damage to my liver?

Also, what is the damage to my liver in this amount as compared to alcohol? In other words, I have friends that may drink a 6 pack 4 nights a week, and I tell them they're doing more damage to themselves than I am with the acemetaphine....

Any help is really appreciated. Thanks all

The max daily dose of acetaminophen (Tylenol) is 4,000 mg. That would be 8 max strength tabs per day. Any more than that and you're risking liver damage.

I worry about my liver because percocet is acemetaphine partly and for the past two years I've taken alot of it after my accident. I still take it but not as much as my doc prescribed oxycontin..long acting percocet, I believe. I'm glad you posted.

Ok...so you're saying taking 2,500mg per day 3-4 days a week is not doing any long term damage to my liver?

Also, is liquor or acetaminophen worse for you?

Any doctors visit this site?

THANKS

That's my understanding. 2,500mg would be well within the boundaries. But I don't think you want to be taking the 2,500 all in one dose. The intent is to spread out the tablets at about 1,000mg at a crack (two extra strength tylenol tabs).

What I've read also says that alcohol and acetaminophen together are very bad for the liver. I don't know how much of each it would take to suffer damage, but I would definitely not mix the two.

Hi rtd2112- Have you tried taking something different for your migraines? I get terrible migraines and tylenol doesn't touch them. Why not go to the doctor? There are many things you can try. There are meds you can take as soon as you feel the headache coming like imitrex or relpax Or meds you can take everyday for prevention. I myself take a very small does of inderal every night-it's actually a blood pressure med but used for migrain prevention in much smaller doses.

My husband recently had what we believe to be the West Nile virus. He was taking the max amount of tylenol to get rid of high fevers for only a week. Shockingly in that short amount of time he had his liver tested and it reported back complications which is quite scary.
We also learned that tylenol products can also mess with your platelets, something that doctors do not often tell you. His plateletts were low as well as his white blood count. We found this information out not from our family doctor but from a hematologist who did an extensive amount of testing on my husband to try to figure out why he was so ill.

I find that for OTC Excedrine migraine works well because of the combination of aspirin and caffiene to open the blood vessels. I really suggest if you get migraines a lot that you see a specialist and get on maintenance medications. Be really careful with the acetominophen

The 3-4 gram limit is to be spread out over the day, not taken all at once. It is dangerous to take 2,500 mg all at once. The reason it is safe to take over the course of a day is that it gives your liver a chance to process it bit by bit. Taking it all at once is more than your liver can handle (possibly).

As for which is worse for your liver...I will hazzard a guess that it depends on quantity. Excess drinking would be worse than taking occasional tylenol, staying under the doseage limits. Whereas, taking daily tylenol in excess of 3-4 grams would be worse than an occasional drink or two.

But come on this is not a competition between you and your friends, and just because one thing may be "less dangerous" than the other, doesn't mean they both aren't dangerous, right?

And the worst thing to do is drink AND take alcohol -- that is where the real danger lies. Tylenol (the company) has even come out with commercials and new labeling to address this issue.

That much tylenol is too much in my opinion. My Grandmother was taking that amount or less and suffered from kidney and liver damage. Her doc told me that the majority or liver failure is caused by either alcohol, tylenol, or both. I would find a better way to treat your headaches. Taking this much, this often can cause rebound headaches anyway. They can be very painful and hard to treat. Find a headache specialist and lay off the tylenol.

rtd2112,

I agree with Kissa about the Excedrine, which is nothing more than acetaminophen, aspirin and caffeine. The caffeine is the kicker. I bet you can get better pain relief with two extra strength Excedrine tabs than 4 extra strength tylenol tabs. Sine I have trouble with aspirin I keep generic tylenol and caffeine tabs around. Then I break up the caffeine tabs to approximate the amount in Excedrine and take the equivalent of two.

Have you tried Imitrex? I've found it to be the best migraine med around. It's prescription.

Best of Luck!

steve
