Hi I am new to this sight but am interested in finding out any information I can for my husband. He has HIGH cholesterol 278 and was given Lovaza( Omega-3-acid) to take 2- 2 times daily. Also he was given Vytorin 1 tablet @ bedtime. His triglycerides are @ 518 and his HDL is @ 32. Any other suggestions to lower this without the meds? [removed]

They say fiber helps. It sounds like his Doctor is doing the right thing. If he is heavy, he should loose weight, it may not affect the cholesteral a lot but should help with triglycerides. Also, alcohol raises triglycerides. I would go along with Dr. for awhile till next test and see how it goes because it really does sound like he is getting good treatment. And of course exercise, that is really important.

sharon,
My only gripe with the LOVAZA is cost. Each pill provides the EPA + DHA of about 1 tsp. of cod-liver oil and costs more than a $1 a day. Taking 4 a day is about 5 bucks.
For $7 you can buy a 12 ounce bottle of cod-liver oil at Vitamin Shoppe and get 72 tsp out of it...good for 18 days and less than $.40 a day.
Thus you are paying a HUGE markup for an Omega-3 supllement.
IF the results are good, maybe down the road you will look into a cheaper way of getting the Omega-3's.
Look for a 44% DROP IN TRIGLYCERIDES FROM THE LOVAZA and more from the Vytorin.
THe Vytorin is a good choice.
Let us know what triglycerides he gets next test...easy on the sugar and the booze.

Will all omega-3 supplements lower TG's...?
Said another way, if I went and purchased Costco O-3 pills, are they as likely to work as well as LOVAZA...?
I see that my Insurance only coves one 1000 mg capsule a day.
I'm interested in this subject as I seem to have the most difficulty with my TG's.

Insulin resistance causes triglycerides to be stubbornly high. Exercise AND reduced carb eating is the best way to deal with it. Dietary supplements have little if any impact. An insulin level or c-peptide test should reveal if this is an issue.

So, you are saying LOVAZA ( AKA Omacor ) will not help triglicerieds...? Isn't this just an FDA approved supplement...?
I'm confused...

VM,
A rather large study that was submitted to the FDA has shown that the 4 gram dosage of Lovaza'a EPA + DHA got a 44% reduction in triglycerides. If my memory serves I think all the people tested started with a triglyceride level of over 500;
That's a LOT of fish oil but I see no reason to doubt the result. And I'm fairly sure you might be able to duplicate the results with much cheaper cod liver oil. Your insurance company is being NAUGHTY.:jester:
More on postprandial triglycerides after a dose of fat at a later date...when I feel more hypothetical. :D:D
