Hello all, Just thought I'd pass along somthing I read in the newspaper regarding insurance allowing early re-fills. I'm not sure if this is a new law but I was not aware until I read it. If a storm is approaching, once they declare a state of emergency, all insurance companies have to drop the rule of no early re-fills on medication. They have to allow you to fill (with a Rx) a 30 day supply regardless if you are due it yet or not. That way your not searching for a store thats open after a storm has hit, and as we know down here in florida, its friggin crazy after these storms hit. You cant even find a grocery store or gas station open until power comes back. Well thats my tip for the day! ;)

oddly enough my sister-in-law just questioned that as she lives in florida, she was worried about her meds and her chemotherapy, said she was going to ask her doctors, so good post. thanks (even though I am not in a hurricane state)

excellent post. i am in florida too and i live about 2 miles from the ocean and about 1/2 mile from the river. i am on the central east coast and in 2004 we got slammed as many of you know. i had absolutely no problems getting early refills on meds. as a matter of fact my doctors office called me to let me know that they had called in my meds and i needed to get them asap.

please if you are in an area that may be hit, do not be complacent about this. after jeanne in 2004 we were without power for almost 6 days. there was nothing open. be sure to watch the news and be prepared. if you wait too long it WILL be too late.

right now we are watching DEAN. i sincerely hope it veers northeast and stays far away but if not my refill is due on the 24th. one storm model has it heading for the east coast of florida by tuesday. those of you here be sure to keep a close on this and make any calls to your doctor on friday or monday if it looks like you are in the path.

i just want to add that we all need to pray for those in hawaii. first a 5.3 earthquake and right behind it a hurricane. ugh god bless ev1 and be safe. morgy porgy:angel:

I know how it feels too to hit by hurricanes. We were hit by a devasting one in 1996 by the name of Fran there where areas here that didn't have power for 2 weeks. Then in 1999, we got hit again by Flyod which caused terrible flooding so don't forget then do come inland and wreck havoc as well. I live about 100 miles inland and Fran came as a big surpise to us because it was not suppose to come this far inland and no one was prepared. But my prayers also go out to those in the state of Texas because they have had it bad with flooding and now it looks like more is on the way. So please don't forget about those poor souls as well.

Well gee, I live along the east coast of FL also,,,,about 2 miles from ocean and 1/2 mile from river also!! Seems like I have a neighbor here too....maybe 100 miles north or south, but same distance from water!! Yes, the hurricanes were horrible ....every other weekend for about a month and a half... Still get anxiety when I hear one is coming near us... The drug stores, grocery stores, pharmacies etc. are closed when a hurricane hits....the shelves in the stores are basically empty...and if there is no power...which happened for days at a time...they are closed.... I agree it would be a great plan to get meds. early,,,if allowed... Can't leave town without them...unless they are with a chain of pharmacies...or walmart..etc. Then you can get them filled nationwide.... I think..... They have you in their puters...so I hope the puter systems are linked.... Have to check on that one, to make sure... This is a good plan...letting people pick up meds early for things of this nature.

This is the kicker- There has to be a state of emergency declared before the insurance rule takes affect.

well if i am not mistaken, as soon as your area is put into a hurricane watch is when you need to start making calls. as soon as we get to hurricane warning, everything kicks in. a state of emergency is usually not called until the storm hits.

All I am saying is the insurance does not have to give you an early re-fill untill the state of emergency has been declared. Yes I would call PM and set up appt ect.. but meds wont be dispensed until then.

Not sure if that equates to r if refills expired on break through meds. I tried to get a pointment thrusday couldn't. We do have a dean headed our way so i will try again Monday we should have state of emergancy by Saturday declared.
So we will see what happens with nuro. ( he is only in our area 1 time a week on thrusday)

Zoey, if you are in Texas, I would really try to get an appt. I think they are saying landfall mid next week possibly in Texas. Good luck.

Wow- Thanks for bringing this up. :)

We live on the East coast of NC, and it's just a tiny strip of land between the ocean and the sound. We are surrounded by water and there have been a couple of years that they have issued mandatory evacuations.

I never knew the insurance company had to allow for a 30 day fill on your meds if this happened. I'm going to have to keep that in mind as hurricaine season rolls forward.

We were hit by Isabel several years ago, and it was horrible. Flooding, wind & rain damage, power outages for a couple of weeks. I can't imagine having to deal with all that PLUS not having your medications.

Everyone who is under threat of Dean- I'll be sending positive thoughts your way.

I believe the law was that should you be affected by a storm and you need a re-fill on meds, the pharmacist could actually make the judgement call to give you up to a week's worth without a drs. approval. after katrina hit and all those people were misplaced the law was changed that the pharmacist could make the judgement call and give you 30 days worth of medication.

i am with ozzy when it comes to the fact that being in a storm is bad enough but had it not been for my meds i could not do it. well i probably could but OMG just thinking about a storm hitting here is anxiety provoking...thinking of a storm hitting and dealing with the before, during and after without meds, paralyzing.

god bless ev1 and hunker down and be safe.

I have heard something to that effect about the PharmD being able to make a judgement call there as well. I was not sure about the rules of it but will try and look it up as it has peaked my interest now!

I have heard of this somewhere before, don't know how recently it came into effect or if it's been around for a while. But thank you for the reminder. I'm on the south Texas coast and Dean was at one point heading DIRECTLY for me and I was stressing big time. Glad it didn't hit here, but I am very sad where ever any hurricane ends up. Wish we had a crystal ball, huh? But I have many many friends in the area of Mexico that it hit after it passed the Yucatan and passed thru the gulf of Mexico and hit down in Veracruz area. It's an incredibly beautiful area at the foothills of the Sierra Madre moutains, lots of rivers and waterfalls, but not a high tourist area...good for the tourists but not for those who live there. I started back to work last week and with the stress of that and the stress of my own hurricane preparations I haven't been able to bear to watch the news to see how bad it was in the areas where my friends live. I'm imagining mud and landslides and flooding. :( Need to start contacting some people to see how they are doing and how bad it was and if they need anything.
Thank you again, Mudbone, for the reminder about our meds. I know we're all hyper sensitive and so easily stressed after the last couple years of hurricanes so any reminders and tips help.
Prayers for all of us who live in hurricance prone areas...I've got my boards on the windows and they will stay up til the season is over, my home insurance verified to make sure everything is in order and up to date and evacuation plans and prep ready in case another one starts brewing. It ain't over yet, and I know I can't handle the stress of the last couple weeks again...I was about ready to check myself into the psych ward.:dizzy:

Thanks yall for heads up i did get a docs appointment in Thursday funny thing we had a sudden Humberto happening it did veer off but waiting and watching does affect us. Was grateful for the information. Oh small note doc did good about my normal stuff patches etc, but i had forgotten to ask for refills for break through meds. I hadn't used all the refills but the refill date expired. They called that in for me. I thought that was very way cool.
I thanked the pharmacist as well. His response was it was on record that i didn't use up the refills by date required and i had been seeing that nuro for a few years, they usually are not concerned about folks that have been seeing the same doc same meds for years. He also stated it is normal if a storm comes in for folks to stock up on there meds a bad one or tropical in nature. Stress can cause harm to many medical conditions and aggravate many conditions .

Thanks for the info. I have lived in florida since '92, and have been in pain management since '02; I always wondered what I would do if I ran out of my meds during a hurricane situation. I know that many people move to Fl for relief but this rainy season just drives me loco pain wise. Especially when there is a hurricane.
