Apparently the chinese have been using it iand they make most toys for Mattel, Fisher Price and others .I wonder how many years this has been going on and how it could contribute to some of these disorders children are suffering from. Now there are massive recalls but maybe too late for some.

Believe it or not, I've actually had both of my kids tested for mercury AND lead poisoning. Both were negative.

Let me edit this to say that it is true that lead poisoning CAN look like ADD as can a whole host of other things. The forerunners are asthma, sleep deprivation, and depression.

Jennita,

Lead has been used in house paint for far longer than people have been buying toys for their children, from China or anywhere. Children have been damaged from flaking old wall paint for a very long time (a hundred years or more?). The physical and mental symptoms of lead poisoning are very different from the symptoms of ADD. Good try, though!

I'm sure it's caused many hazards, ADD like or other. And I really didn't say it was the only or absolute cause for every case of ADD because...even ADD itself is not an absolutely biologically confirmed disease or disorder so how could I confirm this as an absolute? So my try is as good as any out there including the psychiatric professionals tries at figuring this thing out.

However, there has no doubt been some brain damages incurred, as with any toxin, to some poor kids out there and it's a shame that even in this age when we know what is toxic, what should not be used to make toys, that this incessant outsourcing our country is doing is causing such harm to save a buck!!!

I know, lets use mercury laced metal parts too, this way they can choke and be poisoned but at least the chinese work cheap and that toy is only 4.50 instead of 5 bucks.

UGH.

I personally have had high levels of lead. And since it has a
long half-life in bones I likely still have fairly have levels from the rebound effect of it being liberated from bone.

Not sure what degree if any it could play in the ADD/ADHD or inattention and hyperactivity associated with other conditions. But there is a very large number of studies linking higher lead levels to alot of behavioral and health problems.

Exposure at age 6 and under usually causes permanent damage. Thats why there should be a close to zero lead content in things young kids are near.

ADHD is in part considered a behavioral problem thus a possible link.

I'm sorry about your lead condition, how did you get it?

Not completely certain. I remember chewing the lead from a box of 22 LR bullets I found as a kid. Many years later I worked with lead solder and lead acid storage batteries quite often to. Supposable lead lines are viewable in ones teeth if you have an acute single exposure. I plan to have a tooth studied in the future.

I hope you don't mind me asking - Were you diagnosed by blood or by hair analysis?

Hair and yes I know its borders on junk science. I did have high levels though 40 ppm. Normal is 0-1.4 ppm.

I agree with the point as far as lead causing brain damage and that we shouldn't be buying from China where there are obviously problems with monitoring the safety of items manufactured until such a time as China does something to change their ways of conducting business with other countries.

This isn't anything new....they have been duping Americans for years.
The first issue I recall was the Dateline programs about the dog and cat fur a good number of years ago. It was then I realized these people apparently had no regard for life....later on some paid with their own lives because of their unusual tastes. Then they poisoned our pets.

In my opinion we would be better off to stop importing from China if possible but I don't see this ever happening.
My husband knows someone who decided to buy nothing Chinese made. He said this person stated it was quite difficult to track down exactly where materials used in producing certain items were manufactured.

Now, as much as I agree with the lead problem as far as very young children who might ingest lead chips, I seriously doubt an older child who is beyond the age of sticking everything in their mouth is going to be harmed.

And these toys are certainly not the only source of lead poisoning. Many old homes were painted with lead based paints. One might paint over them but the lead is still there...
And I'll bet there's still places where leaded gas is being sold too...maybe not in this country.

There's plenty of dangerous things in & around the home that can cause brain damage.
And I don't know whether ADD is caused by anything in one's environment, genetic or a combination of both.
Maybe Mommy drank too many diet cokes while pregnant...I don't know!

I was diagnosed with narcolepsy in 1984 and why I take pemoline which was also prescribed for ADD.
