View Full Version : What should i expect after Chalazion drainage?

Hi,

My story: (The story is about my lower left eyelid)

I became the "lucky owner" of a chalazion quite a few montsh back. I went to the doctors when people started asking "***", and the doctor used 1 minute to say that it was a Chalazion.

I got a "refferal" to a eye-doctor, he said it simple, nothing would help, the only wait it could be "stopped" was to drain it. So it got it done there, and it got impressed.

I was nervous on what would happend, since i cannot stand for shots, but the doctor first used a anesthetic cream before injecting anesthetic (2 shots..) So the operation itself was 100% painless (impressive!)

After the operation i got some wool-things to keep the eye dry, but nothing more, not even a clue on how quick it would heal. (naive me thought it would go away like that)

This was 28 days ago, i went on eye-drops for a week afterwards but the lump is still pretty big (noticable). How long will it go before i notice changes? Another doctor suggested 3 to 4 weeks.

It`s closing up to 4 weeks now, and a few days ago i noticed a new swelling ~1 / 2 CM from drained one, is this a stye, or should i go to the eye doctor ASAP and ask for more antibiotics? (eye drops)

Ang not least, what is going on? Why does it take so long time, and why does it look like new lumps are on the way?

This does not bother me physicly, but i do think of it a lot, didnt help that i did not get too much info from the doctor.

I was not given tips like using a hot compress(etc), but i do try it anyway since many other suggests it.

Any good tips/ideeas?

Best regards from northeren europe.

Hi,

I have them also, I have had done removed or cut out and it healed really quick, the other they shot steriods in it, no pain in healing but took a while.
The eye dr, both times gave me no drops of any kind. Got along super. I get them all the time on my lower, hot compresses usually do the trick. But they have always been on my lower lid. I have one today that came on Saturday evening on the upper lid. Very big today, sore, itchy and looks really bad. I guess I can't not tell at this point if it is one of my oil galnds plugged or not. Usually you can pull the lid up and see white string leading to the actual glad.
I do not believe styes you can, which would lead me to believe it is not a chalazon. Look under your lid and see if you can see a white string leading to the lash if you can it is a chalazon, if not it is a stye. Use the antibiotic drops and ointment if any. Not sure what I am going to do, pretty misrable today. Good Luck, Denise

Am curious what happened with the eye drops. I had a chalazion removed 1.5 months ago. She had trouble getting it from the inside of the lid so she also made an incision on the outside. Also received a steroid shot and she put me on antibiotics for 3 months. It looks better, but is still red and a bit swollen/scabby. Can't tell if it's scar tissue or if the original chalazion was not removed, or if it is a new one forming.

I used the drops until i felt the lump was completely gone.

Allthough now i notice that a new one (i noticed this since after the first surgery) is not going away, so i wonder if il get a new surgery when its "big enough", il just have to wait and see.

Wondering if im going jo join the "recurring chalazions" gang or not..;)

I had one operated on in May last year, within 48hrs the swelling was gone and it was back to normal. Wasn't a huge one but large enough to be constantly draining fluid into my eye that was affecting my vision. I hope it never comes back!

I was diagnosed with a chalazion this morning. I am skeptical about the minor surgery, but it seems it's the only hope. The doctor said I waited too long and now the lump has hardened and heat compressions may work but only if I do them regularly for about a month. I know I'm not patient enough to keep doing them for a month so I'm opting for the 5 minute surgery. They said they would make a small incision from the inside of the eyelid to avoid scarring and then drain the chalazion. I would have to be on antibiotics for a week or two. Does this sound right? Should I do it?
